WJAC-TV Video

A large brush fire in Cameron County may have been caused by a passing train, officials said. The fire started around 4 p.m. Tuesday along Route 120 in Gibson Township.

Officials said the cause is still under investigation, but said it may have started when the train used its brakes and created a spark.Because of dry conditions, the fire quickly spread to Route 120, then spread to the mountain side on the other side of the road. The fire quickly spread across 500 acres.

Crews said they had it contained at one point Tuesday night, but it rekindled Wednesday morning. As of noon, it had burned 400 acres of land and was still advancing.

what?
first it's gas wells.
then turbines.
now trains?
let's get rid of them too!

Maybe we could start by suppressing the sparks, so the trains could run safely, without burning the forest down.

On a serious note, trains have been causing fires for many years. There's really nothing that can be done except shut them down. Kudos to the volunteer fire companies, forestry workers and others who have to battle these blazes. They are in some extreme areas where access is very difficult

This area needs more forest fires. They used to be part of nature until man started putting them out. They spark new growth in an old forest. Let it burn.

There may be some truth in your statement, but when something that isn't part of nature, in this case a train causes the fire then it is by all means "man's" responsibility to take action.
