Potter County Puts Out Call For Volunteers

What Can You Help With
The Potter County Commissioners chose an appropriate setting to announce a new outreach effort for volunteers willing to serve on any of several county authorities, commissions and advisory boards. Commissioner Paul Heimel and Chief Clerk/Administration Director Todd Brown put out the call during today’s Volunteering element for the Leadership Potter County class, hosted by the Potter County Education Council.

In an effort to broaden diversity, geographic representation and background knowledge, the commissioners will be building a roster of individuals who have a willingness to volunteer. Among the organizations that have occasional vacancies are the Planning Commission, Solid Waste Authority, Housing and Redevelopment Authorities, Human Services Advisory Committees, Conservation District and others.

In the coming weeks, the commissioners will circulate a summary of the many appointive positions/responsibilities and reach out to citizens from across Potter County to encourage them to volunteer. As vacancies arise or incuments’ terms expire, the commissioners will rely on that database to determine who might be candidates to serve.

Judging by the content of local papers and on-line news sources, Potter citizens are better informed about local, state, national, and world events than ever before. They are probably more well-traveled than their parents. This means they have a better perspective of how seemingly faraway happenings affect the local, regional and state economy. New ideas don't seem so foreign. In fact they may even work here! Instead of naysayers blowing off anything that is different, forward- thinking citizens now have the opportunity (a.k.a. responsibility) to share their thoughts in areas of interest that would not only promote our region, but lead it the forefront of a safe and prosperous future. Problems and new ideas need the perspective of citizens from all walks of life, if anything is to be accomplished. It's more than coffee shop talk that's being called for here. It's ACTION!! What CAN we do to make all our lives better? I believe we're all being dared to make a positive difference. VOLUNTEER! It's a job you can't be fired from, and you can set your hours.

Who would want to volunteer for anything up there. It seems like no matter what it is, so many on this blog can do it better or trash talk the decisions and actions they try to make! brad
