Being green not making enough green

SMETHPORT (EC) — Rustick LLC announced Friday that effective the week of April 6, it will suspend the free collection of recycling materials at the drop-off boxes located throughout the county.
Rustick has provided this service since late 2005 at no charge to the residents of McKean County. According to a press release, company officials said that “the county has appreciated the free services the company has provided and certainly understands its inability to continue to provide these services with very little or no revenue from the sale of recyclables or any fees to offset expenses.”

Why not ENFORCE no littering and use that money to offset the recycling fees?
There is going to be an increase in the garbage dumped over the banks of our back roads in our enchantingly beautiful area partially due to the removal of recycling bins and the fact that the solid waste authority states they do not have enough money for clean up days, compounded with the cost per bag to have your garbage picked up and you have a recipe for illegal dumping. This is going to affect all the residents human and animal, the eco system, and tourism by turning this majestic area into large garbage dump. I have recycled for over 28 yrs. I owe this respect to my country, and myself. I have followed the recycling bins all over the area as they have been moved. People use these as garbage bins. Ruining the privilege of this free service for all. I realize the cost of waste removal is high, and many of us have lost our incomes or live on fixed incomes, but we need to remain cognitive and logical and find solutions. I know the officials have been discussing the issues of recycling and solid waste, but we need to call our elected public officials and give them any suggestions that we may have, to help find a solution to this problem soon. They need to know this is very important to all of us. And meanwhile we can all do our part to keep the garbage from piling up or we will all suffer the consequences of this credulous, thoughtless and ignorant act. Janice Cotter
