Attention Al Qaeda and Taliban: Here Is Our War Plan for Afghanistan

Attention Al Qaeda and Taliban: Here Is Our War Plan for Afghanistan

By U.S. Representative Glenn `GT’ Thompson

We don’t tell the opposing team our game plan. We don’t share our strategy across a card table or over a chess game. Why would we tell the Taliban when we are going to stop the war in Afghanistan—that is, if we expect to win?

No one likes this war. As the father of a soldier wounded in Iraq, my greatest desire is for peace and to bring our troops home and to never lose another American life to a war on foreign shores. But we did not bring on this conflict.

As the President so eloquently said in his address at West Point, “We did not ask for this fight. On September 11, 2001, nineteen men hijacked four airplanes and used them to murder nearly 3,000 people. They struck at our military and economic nerve centers. They took the lives of innocent men, women and children without regard to their faith or race or station.”

In August of 2008, candidate Obama said that the war in Afghanistan is “not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity…If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which Al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting; this is fundamental to the defense of our people.” He was correct back then.

As President, his opinion obviously has changed.

I applaud his decision to send 30,000 troops to “almost” meet the request from the on-the-ground commander General Stanley McChrystal. The additional troops will enable counterinsurgency operations to protect the population and to enable Afghanistan’s democratic government to secure its territory.

But I cannot agree with his decision to tell the Taliban and Al Qaeda that we will transfer forces out of Afghanistan in July 2011—just as the 2012 election season gets under way. As an Afghanistan official put it, "We couldn't solve the Afghanistan problem in eight years, but now the U.S. wants to solve it in eighteen months? I don't see how it could be done.”

I don’t disagree with the President’s goals of turning the protection of Afghanistan over to its own security forces, who we will train. Nor do I want to see this conflict continue without an endgame. Where I disagree with the President is that he shared the game plan with our enemies. That decision will demoralize our allies and embolden our enemies.

If the enemy is smart, they will take an 18-month vacation, spend the time recruiting and come back in July 2011 at full strength, re-establish their strongholds and reinstate their terrorist training camps.

What will we have achieved if that is the result?

As a ex Army SGT I would like to know what ever happened to not allowing information concerning troop movements and strength to be made public. What ever happened to being punished for discussing classified information. Why can the media show pictures of the enemy preparing to do battle with US Forces and not reporting the information. How many soliders have been killed by the media putting out information concerning our troops or tactics. A simple thing like putting out what units are being readied to ship out, can give the enemy what they need to plan. Its all a joke to our newspeople. Maybe they should carry a gun for awhile.

This is what happens when a President is elected for all the wrong reasons. Obama ran on a "Ready for Change" platform but never laid out any of his proposed changes. Now America is seeing them. All of you that voted for Obama......you deserve this.

Anonymous said...

Every president since George Sr. has announced our intentions about our war efforts. Remember Desert Storm- remember George Jr. announcing to the world what was going to take place after 9-11? So don't place the blame only on Obama- Repulicans and Democrats alike have done this. It used to be during the Eisenhower administration and before that- we NEVER told what our stragedy would be. Unfortunately this is the age of television where everyone thinks they deserve to know what's going on. And our country and our menand women in uniform are the ones who suffer because of it.

Oh come on now 12:21, the best is yet to come.

Wait until re-election year, I guarantee the American people will have one hell of a surprise when they see what this Administration is really up to.

Of course, public opinion will as usually be swayed at that time in favor of supporting our President...you will see...just wait for it...but when it is all over we'll look back an realize our own ignorance lead to our demise.

I re-read Thompson's letter and noticed that he himself is saying "If the enemy is smart they will take an 18-month vacation" and regroup- after our forces are gone. Now- let's look at this for a moment- is this another politician "announcing" what the enemies strategy should be? Hmmm- Is this any different that our government announcing what our plans are for removal of our troops? Let's hope the enemy doesn't read Mr. Thompson's letter- they just might take his suggestion and then where will we be.Just food for thought.

Oh bull crap.
I had high hopes for Congressman Thompson, although I knew his campaign was heavily subsidized by those whose interests he might push when he took office, especially the ones who have been profiting so much over the years from human suffering through our broken health care system. They love the status quo because they make a lot of money from it, so they fight off reform, no matter how much sense it makes, and they make big time money contributions to Congress members to protect their interests, even at the expense of Tommy's health or Grandma's life.
Periodically Thompson has shown signs that he is simply "one of them" when it comes to a certain tangent of our Republican Party (MY Republican Party).
He has done it again with this bull^$%# statement. When Bush/Cheney were announcing Operation This and Operation That and Mission Accomplished and explaining rationale and strategy, they were applauded, praised and supported for their courage, resolve and candor with the American public.
The same people who praised those characteristics then now condemn them because the messenger is Obama rather than Bush.
What a simplistic, shallow, manipulative political statement this was by my party's Congressman. I wish I would not have voted for you Glenn. I thought you would be your own man. :>(

Shirlee, with all due respect, Al-Qaeda is not reading Solomon's words or Mr. Thompson's letter.

They are watching our national news, which will of course present this deadline.

You obviously underestimate the enemy. By now they should have proven to us their determination, their resourcefulness, and willpower.

They do not need Mr. Thompson to point out the obvious.

As much scum as these people may be, dumb they are not.

I thank Mr. Thompson for bringing this to light for the American People.

I'm pretty sure if our enemy was smart enough to pull off 9-11 they would be smart enough to come to that same conclusion as Thompson.

Maybe you should consider the Libertarian Party 12:53.

I have recently realized that my own belief and value system parallels the Libertarian philosophy more so than any other.

You should check it out :)

I'll take a weirdo like Ron Paul that will tell you how it really is, regardless of what you think, any day over these crooks we have now, and the crooks we have had for the past 9 years.

The point that all of you are missing is that this whole "war" if you continue to call it that....is a big joke, just lime Vietnam and Desert Storm were. When you go to play a football game you don't send in half of the team!!! Our government is too worried about ewhat the rest of the world will think if we end all of our power in there and crush the enemy. Don't think for a minute, with the technology that we have, that the armed forces don't know where we need to hit to utterly destroy the taliban and al queada camps...the powers to be just doesn't have the balls to let them do it. We have highly trained personnel and the top weaponry in the world....why are we holding back?? We should treat this like a good old redneck deer drive.....line up our troops at one end and push the whole country out to the other end. If innocent civilians are found harboring terrorists, then they are no longer innocent....simple.

Anonymous said...

The enemy watches our new stories-a given.
Our government lays out a plan so the enemy can reliably know what our armies will do next.
Of course only a inept government would reveal the true plans. Who really believes the USA is this stupid?

Mr. Wizzik said...

I beg to differ 1:14.

Even if we lined all of our troops up and walked through the country as you suggest, we could not eradicate the insurgency.

For one thing, it is very hard to distinguish between civilian and terrorist. Tell me, how would you know the difference?

Wouldn't the enemy just disguise themselves as ordinary citizens until the troops moved through?

I don't doubt that we have the intelligence and the manpower to annihilate these strongholds as you suggest, however what you fail to mention is that many of these "strongholds" are in fact within residential areas...and not all of these civilians are harboring the terrorists. In fact, there may only be a handful out of thousands of civilians in that area that are actually responsible for harboring the terrorist element there.

We cannot win this war via means of traditional warfare.

To win this "war" will require much more than ordinary firepower. We need to sway the opinion of the people in these regions.

The kind of thinking you demonstrate 1:14, is the kind of thinking that has turned world opinion against the USA.

1:14 I agree with you 100%

How many Afghani's attacked us on 9/11? I thought all that country said was show us the proof that Bin Laden did and we'll give him to you. The FBI later admitted they didn't have enough evidence on Bin Laden to have 9/11 as one of his Wanted Poster crimes. Go look at his wanted poster, see if I am right. An escalation in a congressionally undeclared war gets you the Nobel Peace Prize? War is Peace. Some of you know, some of you are silly sheep. It is all by design. Here's something I just heard about, one organization's effort to fix things in the world and get off this tyrannical New World Order slave plan... http://www.larouchepac.com/

We will have to deal with Iran in very short order. We have a standing army in the two countrys next door.Do you think anything going on with our troops has much to do with the Taliban and Bin Laden? Either we stop Iran now or we can't later. Look at the big picture. If we are going to force them to stop escalation we must have a deterent.A very large seasoned and well equipped military on the doorstep is a hole card.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a plan to me. Let them take a break...we won't. much easier to get within when they have their guard down. Everyone is so quick to judge what is put out there not thinking our military and commander in chief might know exactly what they are doing. No, I didn't vote for Pres. O, but I'll trust the military over a bunch of bloggers.

Smart tactics would be do what we did to Japan when they invaded Pearl Harbor. It took 2 Atom Bombs to stop them from continuing their attack on the United States. What is there of any worth over in Afghanistan nothing but Poppy Fields. I say we Drop a Bomb finish making it a desert and let them idiots decide if they are with us or against us on the fight against terrorism. I do not care about any agenda or proof they need that Bin Laden did anything wrong. He Co-Conspired with many terrorists who did have involvement. This means the taliban is conspiring with Al Quaeda. Best Result Nuke them. who cares about their casualties, they did not care about ours. If the United States wants to show they are the strong force they are start by sending real messages not no propaganda bullshit. Our Military is not a police force. They are suppose to protect Americans.

Did Oboma say while campaigning for the presidency “I’ll bring the troops home by the end of the year”? The end of the year is near, and now he’s saying, “We’re gone’a send more troops in”. Gosh – if his ‘head of security’ can’t even check the guest list, what do you think will happened next....

Ugotta B Kiddin said...

Mr Wizzik,
If it isn't possible to win the war with our troops, then the United States of America should pull out all of its troops and bring them home and gather up a couple of thousand politicians and send them over there to "sway" the opinion of the people. Why does this government feel that we have to be the peace keeping force for the whole world? Why do our forces always get sent out to go above and beyond the call of duty for countries and people that don't really give a damn whether they are there or not. This is the kind of ACTION that has turned the world opinion against us. We shouldn't send our team in to play the game unless we expect them to use all of the skills that they know to win that game.

Anonymous said...

I find it amusing that the lot of you know enough about the military's plans to condemn them. Gee, you must all be secret agents or something. (I'm betting on the 'something')
Here's a thought....let's let Obama have a chance to let his plan work. I'm sure you all think that his first 10 months have been a complete failure because he hasn't started one war or invaded even one third-world country. That's a crying shame for all of the retard rednecks that base their beliefs on 'might is right'.
Frankly, as a republican that voted for Obama, I think he's doing a grand job so far. I'm willing to give him a chance to do what he, the duly elected president of the USA, can do. It can't be any worse than the bozos who were in charge for the previous 8 years who invaded everything they saw.
For the 12:45 poster who warns "..the American people will have one hell of a surprise when they see what this administration is up to..." I nominate you King of the Retards. Congratulations!! You'll be receiving a bag of crap in the mail to match what you're posting here.
And the 12:21 poster, who says the people who voted for Obama "..deserve this." You get the Dick Cheney award for your thoughts. Let's shorten it to take out the Cheney part. Now you're cookin!
Glen Thompson is a joke. He makes me cringe when he talks or puts out a statement. Anyone still wondering why Northcentral PA is still thought of as a Hillbilly Heaven? Just listen to Thompson.
Lastly, I voted for Obama because he's full of hope. Not doom and despair, but a Man who dares to see the world as a peaceful place where we can all get along and share, and care about each other and work toward peace. At the very least, he actually thinks about his decisions and agonizes about sending our best and brightest to what could be their death, instead of shooting from the hip and hoping he kills whatever scares him.

Anonymous said...

6:03....the world has never ever been a peaceful place. Never will be. I wish that were not the case, but it is. I agree he thinks and agonizes over decisions but I am afraid the is thinking and agonizing over the political ramnifications of his decisions. Granted that is certainly not unique to him but most of these current politicians we seem to constantly elect. Hope I am wrong on this one.

Anonymous said...

6:03 You lost me at "retard." Seriously, if you want to give an educated opinion then have enough integrity to show a little class.

Might have been a good thought that you had, but who gives a crap when you show your lack of tack right away. Better luck next time!

lalalalala you buy camel, get free slushy.lol..

Mr. Wizzik said...

""..the American people will have one hell of a surprise when they see what this administration is up to..." I nominate you King of the Retards. "

You probably would have said the same thing, when I made that EXACT same statement about the war in Iraq some 8 years ago.

Some people never learn from history.

"I find it amusing that the lot of you know enough about the military's plans to condemn them. Gee, you must all be secret agents or something."

This actually pertains to this article. See, this article is about the fact that we have more information available to us, and hence more information available to the enemy. Do you deny the fact that there is more information available during this war than any previous American war?

"Mr Wizzik,
If it isn't possible to win the war with our troops, then the United States of America should pull out all of its troops and bring them home and gather up a couple of thousand politicians and send them over there to "sway" the opinion of the people. Why does this government feel that we have to be the peace keeping force for the whole world?"

Just because I said we cannot win the war with troops alone, does not mean they do not play an essential role in winning the war. However, troops alone will not win this war. How long have we tried using this strategy? Tell me, what has changed that convinces you that now it will work? Adding more troops? You think that is the solution?

As I said earlier, when you cannot distinguish the enemy from civilians it makes this task nearly impossible, regardless of how many additional troops (because no matter how many it won't be enough).

As for why we feel we need to police the world, i don't know...the reality is that we enter wars to protect or further our interests, mainly concerning energy resources throughout the world.

The Iraq war is a perfect example.

However, since we are there, we must finish what we started.

Unless of course you want the "Iraq War" to become the "Iraq Conflict" as Vietnam did.

As a veteran of two combat deployments to Aghanistan, I will share some information with you all. 1.) There will be no success in Afganistan until Pakistan takes extreme measures to elimiate the safe haven for terrorists in the Wazirastan region. This far, Pakistan has done just enough to keep receiving our billions in foreigh aid 2.) US, Nato and Allied Forces need to hunt down kill or capture every combatant that is linked to the Taliban, Al Q or any other Islamic Extremist group. 3.) The infastructure of Afghan must be rebuilt. Power plants, roads, bridges, schools and governments must be rebuilt and legitimized. 4.) Once the first three steps have been completed a sizeable global force must remain to assist Afgan military forces and gov; ensuring the Afgan people we with them until the end.

Unfortunately these things should have been done starting in early 2002, and now we are way behind, and I don;t believe the American people have the stomach to finish the job.

And to those that believe Pres Q is doing an excellent job; are you serious? Unprecedented debt, rising unemployment, corporate bailouts, cash for clunkers, and now public health insurance and cap and trade. All programs that are backboned by working class Americans to benefit the lazy, unmotivated, and "I feel sorry for myself" generation. Simply sad!

6:03:00 poster

I have been reading the responses here. Interesting.

I have not written any thing yet, but I have decided to respond to what YOU have said. Your words are a feeble attempt at voicing an opinion, an opinion that is done without tact. Who died and left you the expert? You are a prime example of the ignorant, rude and self centered people we have in the Omaha Admin.

All I have to do is look at some who have the right to vote, makes me cringe to think our future is in their hands. America, land of the demoralized! And it is sad to know you fit in the later category and even sadder to think you lack respect for your neighbors.

How dare you call your home Hillbilly Land! Now this statement alone has struck my nerve and the main reason why I decided to reply.

Oh you ignorant person. I would say man, but I'm not sure if you are a man or woman... but my instinct tells me your a man.

When you talk down your home, your just plain in the loosing side of life. I am not a native of Potter County but I have lived here long enough to know this land is a blessing!

You need to get a heart. You are truly a ignorant and rude person.

I think your issues run much deeper then the words your threw out of your mouth.

I think you should refrain from posting until you have something constructive to say!

They say first impressions are lasting impressions! And my impressions of you ...well let your post speak for itself.

So I decided to nominate YOU King of the Retards. Congratulations!! You'll be receiving a bag of crap in the mail to match what you're posting here.

One day you will be eating your words as well.

A fool and his folly, my my.

Our Country has to many fools who have to much to say..... and I agree with some who have said, just wait, things in this Country are not going to get better, it is going to get worse.

We are way in over our heads and it's not just hot water, it is quick sand.

It's good to talk and we can talk til we are blue in the face, about the issues that are destroying our future. But it is not going to change a thing. Change comes with respect for where you live, love for those who live next to you and making a difference in your community.

So forget about the White House ( it is out of our reach), look close to you and begin to make a "real" change.

Talk can be good, talk can be cheap and it can be hurtful. Let us stop talking and start proving we can make a difference. Get off your computer, step out into the light and touch a life!

If anyone on here thinks that they can do a better job, running the country, then by all means, whats holding you back? Perhaps a large lack of education? Please tell me you're kidding?

This comment actually irritates the living hell out of me.

I SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! That means I don't want them to DIE! I don't want them to get blown up or dismembered or harmed any other way for that matter.

However, I'll tell you right now our government is crooked as all hell, and our President is a damn liar.

Tell me, how does criticizing our President not support the troops?

I've heard this argument for over 8 years and it makes me sick.

This is the same exact kind of propaganda that led to the Iraq War, the same type of lies and manipulation of the truth that convinced the American Public that is was in our best interest to invade Iraq.

Just because our President gives orders to our Military, does not mean that I cannot criticize our President without bashing our troops.

It's not our troops fault that they take orders from "O".

I've long been critical of the Bush Administration, in fact in my eyes they are nothing more than crooks.

I've opposed the Iraq War before it began, but I HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED OUR TROOPS!

You people support sending our young men and women off to die for a false war under the guise of "supporting our troops", then tell us when we question our President that we are not supporting our troops.

I'm glad that you see sending them off to die as more beneficial and supportive than trying to end a war peacefully by questioning the real motives behind such.

Makes me sick to my stomach anymore when I hear someone say you do not support the troops b/c you don't support the President.

Who here wants the top 3%, not 5%, to continue gaining more money while the rest of us go down in value?
The Dems are the ones trying to break the status quo, not the Republicans. They're still saying that if we give the rich people more money, they'll create businesses and spend more, thus allowing us working class folk to have jobs and sell our goods, to the wealthy. It's called 'trickle-down economics', and honest to god, it's a hoax.
Don't believe me? Ask Glen Thompson, he'll tell you it's TRUE and that he BELIEVES it works.
