I-86 Reported Shut Down After Explosives Spill

At 6:49 pm, a tractor trailer roll over was reported near Olean NY.

The accident was reported to have happened near the Hinsdale NY exit of I 86, and the Olean town line, in the eastbound lane.

Hinsdale and Olean FD’s were dispatched to the scene.

During dispatch, 911 operators received a call reporting that there may be explosive materials in the trailer.

The driver was still in the vehicle at the time of dispatch, and actually confirmed that he was hauling explosive materials to the 911 operators. He also said that the amount was in the 40,000 pound range.

First units arrived on scene at 6:55 pm.

At 6:56 pm, the eastbound lane was ordered to be shut down.

At 7:16 pm, Westons Mills FD was requested to send an engine to the Hinsdale station for standby.

Units on scene then reported that there were no injuries, and no transport to the hospital would be needed.

**UPDATE**

As of 8:55 pm, crews were still on scene, and I 86 was still shut down.

UPDATE--11:20 PM--MIKE HEALY REPORTS:

Information that I'm getting indicates that the road will be closed in both directions from Olean to Cuba at minimum until morning. They are awaiting the arrival of crews trained in explosives to be able to move the materials. Also, due to the nature of the issue the material may have become unstable and they do not want to risk moving it at this time.
