Potter County To Participate In Take Back Drugs Day

‘Take Back Drugs Day’
Event Saturday, April 30
At Police Barracks

Potter County will be participating in National Take-Back Drugs Day, which allows residents to bring old, unused prescription medication to a central location for legal and appropriate disposal. It will be held on Saturday, April 30, at the state police barracks on Denton Hill from 10 am to 2 pm. There is no cost for this service, which is part of a national day to recognize the importance of keeping unused medication out of the hands of children and drug dealers, and to protect the environment.

“This type of event has been long overdue in Potter County, given the growing problem with the abuse and illegal sale of prescription medications.,” said District Attorney Andy Watson. “Many medications that are recovered during arrests are narcotic medications which pose a significant health risk and possibility of overdose among teenagers. There has been a growing trend of teenagers and young adults abusing and selling prescription medication that they find in their parents’, grandparents’, or even friends’ medicine cabinets. ”

Many people are faced with being unable to dispose of old, unused prescription medication, as trying to dispose of these items presents problems to the environment and, potentially, healthy drinking water. Anyone having questions, including how to dispose of these medications properly, should contact District Attorney Watson at 814-274-9450 or State Police Corporal Mike Murray at 814-274-8690.

I dont understand why everyone is so worked up about flushing your meds!!!! Ya it prob. isnt safe for the envirment but what is the difference from flushing your old meds down the toilet to dumping comet in your toilet and then flushing it??? Can someone explain to me the difference?? PLEASE!

maybe the doctors shouldn't had out large amounts of meds to the point of excess they are costly to our insurance and out of pocket ... its a good idea to have a place to take extra prescriptions, but lets solve the problem before it starts ...pharmists and doc. make money on handing this stuff out also ...not just the kids on the street

Another problem is hoarding medication. I used to work at a local pharmacy and when one of our customers would pass away a lot of time we would have family bring in their meds. not knowing what to do with them. I cannot tell you how often we would get back several months worth of each medication.
You cannot compare flushing comet with flushing medication. They have studied the effects of trace amounts of bleach and other cleaners on the environment, and our drinking water. To study the effects of every single chemical make up of every medication and what they will do to us and the environment, especially over a long period of time, would be nearly impossible.
Instead of blaming doctors and pharmacies people need to take responsibility for their own health. We can all control what we do and don't put into our bodies! Unfortunately healthcare is just another capitalist business in this country!

8:25- it's called pharmacy hopping. If you get a prescription filled at one pharmacy then take a new prescription to another pharmacy they have no way of knowing if you had it filled somewhere else if you pay cash. Generally when people are doctor / pharmacy hopping it's to sell or abuse medication. Other people just don't take their medication regularly and still get refills because it's "due". As far as the crooked pharmacist, every profession has bad apples, it doesn't mean every pharmacy or pharmacist is doing wrong. And as far as it being the pharmacies responsibility to tell you your medication shouldn't be filled yet, no, it is your own responsibility...
