RIXFORD, PA - L. Lavern Walker, 96, of Looker Mountain Trail died Wednesday (Oct. 12, 2011) at Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital.
Born June 17, 1915, in Duke Center, he was a son of Albert and Flora DeKay Walker. On Aug. 3, 1941, at her parents' home, he married Donna Harris, who survives.
Mr. Walker was a 1934 graduate of Bradford High School and had lived in Rixford for many years. He was employed in local oil fields as a driller for Wasson Oil Co. in Duke Center. Later, along with his father-in-law, Neil Harris, he co-owned and operated the Harris and Walker Oil Co. in Bradford for 10 years, where he was a pumper. From 1966 until his retirement in 1981, he was employed in the maintenance department of American Olean Tile Co.
For 30 years, he was an Otto Township supervisor and had served as chairman of the board.
Mr. Walker was a member of the Duke Center United Methodist Church, National Rifle Association, Belles & Beaus Square Dance Club and AARP. He loved traveling with his wife in their RV, hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving besides his wife Donna of 70 years are two sons, Bradley (Toni Yeske) Walker of Mindora, Wis., and Terry (Gail) Walker of Pittsfield; a daughter, Sharon Littlefield of Duke Center; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kimberly Walker; a son-in-law, Dale Littlefield; four brothers and three sisters.
A memorial service will be held Monday (Oct. 17, 2011) at 11 a.m. in the Duke Center United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Sheesley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rixford Cemetery.
The family requests memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are under direction of the Frame Funeral Home, Eldred, Pa.
