PA To Cut Off Food Stamps For Those With Over $2,000. In Assets

Pa. to put clamp on food stamp recipients
Critics say too many hurt by assets test

By Alfred Lubrano, Philadelphia Inquirer

Pennsylvania plans to make the amount of food stamps that people receive contingent on the assets they possess -- an unexpected move that bucks national trends and places the commonwealth among a minority of states.

Specifically, the Department of Public Welfare said that as of May 1, people under age 60 with more than $2,000 in savings and other assets will no longer be eligible for food stamps. For people over 60, the limit is $3,250.

Wow! Cutting food stamps to people who worked their whole lives because they tried to save a little money for funerals? Why not add up all the cell phones, I pods, I pads, 100" HD tv's, laptops and other high end stuff these people bought with tax payer money???? I'm tired of working for people to have more than I do. The WORKING people should be taken care of first.I can't wait to get old. No social security, no state help....it makes you proud to be an American doesn't it???

ye, hit us poor people again. When will it ever stop

Anonymous said...

I think they should review every single case in the state one by one and see how much real fraud there is. There is people out there who may really need food stamps and some that are too proud to apply for them, mostly the older people who could use them. But it is a family generational thing that really bothers me.

Where does it say anything about cutting aid for people that worked there whole life? Lots of able young people need to get of there lazy butt and WORK

The following paragraph of this story says in a nut shell how dumb and idea this is! What happens when someone like Doris Gray goes to be with the Lord...if she has no family, the state will foot the bill for burial or if she becomes ill (she can't afford insurance anymore remember), the state has to give her medical coverage because her savings are depleted and she now qualifies for MA. Well PA, looks like we're gonna be in even more debt. Thumbs up to the idoit who thought this was a good idea.
Doris Gray, 72, a divorced, college-educated former graphic artist from Mount Airy in suburban Philadelphia with a heart condition gets $200 a month in food stamps. Rent, insurance and medical costs are more than her $1,079 monthly Social Security check.

She relies on $14,000 in savings to survive, but Ms. Gray estimates it will be depleted in two years. But as of May, if the DPW plan holds, her food stamps will be gone. "It means I'll have to give up paying for my health insurance," she said. "I can't afford food and insurance.

There are many recipes that will help make cat food more appealing.

This does nothing to root out fraud you heartless assholes. It just guarantees that someone's meager savings are fully depleted before the state (and federal gov't) will help them eat (something other than cat food).

About that whole Christian Conservative thing....HA HA...charade you are.

Great so lets say someone like me, who has been working since the age of 16, encounters a hardship where I have no income to feed my family. If I get to the point where I have physical assets greater than $2,000 but no money or luck selling any of those assets I get the shaft and get nothing from the system that I have contributed to my entire working life? Thanks guys.

Anonymous said...

What if the state fixed it so food stamp receipients had a food shopping list similar to WIC/

Anonymous said...

Not all people are freeloaders. Some actually have a full time job and are trying to do right on their own but have to choose either pay their bills or buy food for their family because everything is so expensive you can't afford it all. Then there are some out there who get tons of free help for selling drugs and breeding like rabbits. Seems like the government always takes the help and money from the poor but never take it from their own pay. Then they wonder why people can't pay their mortgages and bills. Why so many people are in debt! Because the government only cares about themselves. They don't give a damn about the people who are trying to make an honest living!!

They invented this thing back when banks were started...it was called a savings account. If a 72 year old person would put $5 per week in there for their working career, they would have plenty to live on. People shouldn't get it in their heads that they can DEPEND on welfare.....

Anonymous said...

That really is too bad. I know on one older couple who save all year to be sure to have enough for heating bills in the winter. Really, it is just a machine with no personal intervention. This couple had to fill out some yearly form, I helped them with all the questions (assets, pregnant, drug abuser etc.) The rec'd notice that a bank statement was missing. So instead of sending a statement, they sent an ATM rec't. Being late 80's, they thought they sent the right thing. Did anyone at the potter county assistance office call them and explain they sent the wrong thing? Nope. Instead they rec'd notice that their food stamps were being stopped because they failed to submit form something or other or failed to be available for a phone interview. The form was sent (minus the statement), and the phone interview happened, but the mechanical, non-personal inhuman system took no regard of the persons affected and simply stopped them with a generic non-specific notice.

Makes you feel good knowing your taxes will be no help to many folks that really need it (and paid into the tax system for many years). But I'll bet the system will still work great for the common ass who is able to work and won't. You know the ones. I'm not talking about those with legit needs.

Hear is an idea, base welfare on an eight dollar an hour job minus taxes, and that is it. No paid cell phone, hud, food stamps, heap, car allowance, etc live on a fixed income no matter how many bastards you give birth to.

From what i see people that need help can't get it while people that don't need it get it all! They know how to work the system wether it's welfare, ssi, ssd ect, ect! I look around in the town i live in and just shake my head!

Anonymous said...

Most people on ss will have to ask for food stamps soon. The joke. We got a raise in SS but medicare went and so did my supplement insurance and so I am now $19.00 in the hole. Please take my raise away and lower my supplement and I will be $19.00 richer. The ones that got richer are the ones on SSS. They do not have to pay for medicare AND THEY DO NOT NEED A SUPPLEMENT becase their ACESS card pays for it. There sure is something wrong with this picture. I have worked since I was 13. There are plenty of sit down jobs many of these people that are SSI can do. They need to check every case. I know of some that are in better shape than I am. They need to do away with food stamps. When I was young you went to the town building and got your flour sugar, powdered milk, cheese etc and took it home and made your supper. Now they go to the deli and we also payed for them to have someone teach them how to cook. That was also a waste of taxpayers money. pizza pizza pizza. The whole system needs to be shut down and redone.

Anonymous said...

This is for Doris Gray. Are you receiving Medicare Part A or B? if so you can apply to the welfare office and if you qualify they will pay your premium. It is worth a try.

ok so let me tell you a little about foodstamps and no i don not use them but i did in a rough situation. when i was pregnant with my 2nd child i only have the 2 and i had to quit working right before i had the baby my husband had lost his job and was having trouble finding one he was getting unemployment and my short term check wasn't here yet i had to resort to foodstamps for a short time til we both got back to work him 3 weeks after the child was born me obviously 6 weeks anyways i filled out all the forms without lying like i know some do but i am not sure how i guess i am not that kind of person so anyways the baby was not born yet and so it was me being pregnant my husband and my other child and they gave me over 500 for 1 month now how crazy is that i couldn't even use it all i don't even know how to shop that way and this was in 2008 and then the state wonders why it's in debt this is why not one family should get that much money there is no reason that a family should spend that much money for food

There are people in my town that cut wood year round, hunt daylight to dark every day of season, trap and hunt coon every night but claim they can not work due to a bad back they claim. these people get there welfare check twice a month all year while I have to get up each day and go to work so this people can sleep all day and then steal from the working people.

If you have more than 1 child and not married you need to loose you welfare and go to work and you wouldn't have time to make more and besides your birth control is FREE just to lazy to take it or the more kids the more money you get. WRONG WRONG.

Many people have over stayed their welcome on Foodstamps, ecspecially now with all of this drilling! Go hold a sign!!! as a senior in High School and a future college student thats what i plan on doing!!

Its pretty bad when the working class bust thier asses to get everything while "some" people on welfare and food stamps and living in housing live better than we do. My husband busts his butt to have what we have and he is paying so much in taxes we can barely afford to buy food, you see the working class at the food bank instead of people who are on welfare. I know people who live in housing who even drive nicer vehicles than we do. They get everything handed to them , why would they wanna work. We need alot more welfare reform than this!

Anonymous said...

Well let me tell u, I have tried to turn some of the welfare losers in this town in... they do fire wood, hunt, and cant work cuz they have a bad back? And claim to be stupid? Some ppl just know how to use and abuse the system! I would be ashamed to flash the ACCESS card if I didnt work... and I know some who act proud as hell! Then they have kid after kid after kid, and have NO CLUE how to raise them! My back hurts every damn day, BUT I must get up and go my ass to work so the WELFARE BUMS can go to the chiropractor for free! AND I happen to know one family with 5 damn kids, never worked (neither of them) and they get over 700 a month in food stamps! PLUS they get cash, full medical,WIC and both parents get SSD and all the kids also get money each month for I dont know SSI or SSD or some stupid shit.... PERSONALLY I think if your to sore and to stupid to work... u should be to sore and to damn stupid to have kids! You should be limited to one child..... after that, get a job, WELFARE is shut off!

All I can say is Praise the Lord, They will have to go to work & work for their pay, no more lazy bums will we have to pay for! Now they need to stop the illegal SSI & disability!

This is outrageous. I do not currently get any of these so called benefits, but I used too. Now the state tells me that because I work and try to support myself and my 4 children that they can no longer help me. The state has no problem helping people that refuse to work and have kids that they cannot support. Those are the types of people that need to be kicked out of the system, make them get a job and support themselves for once instead of making us hard working tax payers support them. It is a sad day when an elderly woman who has worked her entire life get sick and can no longer work that she is entitled to no benefits because she make 100 over the limit. So glad to see what a flawed system we have. Never any help for the family trying to make a life lets hand out all the money to the bums who have never worked a single day.

Crystal said...

For those of you that think that all mothers under the age of thirty with more than one kid are welfare bums you are completely wrong. I have 3 children with a 4th on the way, and I'm only 25. I work 42 hours a week, and receive no help from the state. I am not trash but I agree with every comment you made, but dont put all of the young mothers in the same catagory some of us are trying to make it, and others are just popping out babies they cannot afford.

Anonymous said...

Oil companies are hiring. Put your name in. I personally think they should do with the entire foodstamp program. My mother has been on them for 22 years, with no plans on ever working for anything. Free Loaders make me sick. All the 20 somethings on ssi cuz they have sore backs and can't work. My backs shot, my knees hurt. I work.

No they will not have plenty depositing $5 a week for their working life. they will have about $23,000, and that is at 2% which is actually on the high side. Wish it was that easy to save for retirement.

This whole welfare system is a mess anymore I see nothing wrong with ppl getting help that truly need it however Ive known ppl who r healthier than I am living off welfar there whole life's!Raising 6 kids on welfare while we work our asses off for them..Im on a freakin machine 3x's a wk an still work part time! They are just lazy I think any1 of welfare for along period of time who keeps having kids should be required 2 get fixed if you cant feed them dont breed them! This hurts the honest ppl who truly need a helping hand in times of need and why give them hundreds of dollars in food stamps no 1 can eat hundreds worth of food a month..they r selling these for drugs, booze n cigs its bs! Drug test every single 1 on welfare! And its these ppl that ruin it 4 ppl in actual pain as well they take the drugs 2 get high or 2 sell making money that way plus raking in the food stamps some1 like me who needs pain meds at times cant get it cause of retards selling the stuff...They need 2 investiate the welfare alot more!

Ok, reading these posts all I can think of to say is, IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE THAT IS ABUSING THE SYSTEM PICK UP THE PHONE AND TURN THEM IN!! Seriously, the people that sit back and "know" but say nothing are just as bad as the ones that are abusing the system. If EVERYONE takes a stand to right the wrongs it can happen but every one has to stop sitting around complaining and start doing something about the situation.

(handing in all my check stubs). That was way to much for us to spend!I can't imagine what people with four kids not working at all are getting!

You want welfare, food stamps, etc ?

They should be made to be "fixed" & have a GPS monitor PERMANTLY inbedded in their body to monitor any and all activity when they leave their house & be made to document all purchases that the money is spent on. However, they must also FORST pass a drug test.

Anonymous said...

You all seem to be forgetting who this article points out will be hurt most -- the elderly! They will be penalized for having life insurance policies and savings accounts that they rely on for unexpected expenses (home repairs, car repairs, etc.) Many of our elderly struggle with finding money for bills, medicine, and food.

And adding this assets test means that those who have worked hard to get OUT of the system will no longer be able to. Save up for a house to get out of housing?? Sorry, but you won't be able to. Have two cars for two adults to try to work, sorry but you can't.

Folks, most of the people who are on assistance are the WORKING POOR and the ELDERLY. We receive food stamps despite me working THREE jobs to support my family.

The abuse rate is listed as one of the lowest in the nation. The system is designed to kick people out of the system because of the reporting requirements.

But the assets test has been deemed unfair in the majority of states. Perhaps PA should have a heart and follow suit?!

We always worked and when our kids turned 16, and wanted expensive things that we couldn't afford, they want out and found part time jobs, With the youngest in their early 20's now, they have been well educated with good careers. They were taught the value of life at a young age, and the hard work needed to achieve it. This is what kids should be taught before they are let lose into the real world, and maybe they wouldn't find the need for everyone else to support them. welfare should be for emergencies, and not a form of a career. The elderly that have worked their whole life deserve to be helped, and not the young who claim to be injured or bipolar. I have supported my own children, I really don't think I should have to help support the whole damn Country because parents neglected to teach their children the responsibilities needed to survive on their own. Welfare recipient is NOT a career

I am glad they are putting thisin to effect. I know a man and his wife who have a total of 7 sources of income coming into their home between the two of them. They own a total of 3 vehicles, 2 motorcycles, a couple tractors, a john deer back hoe, 2 houses,(but rent the house they live in from a family member, so they use the homes they own as a source of income), they have 2 home based businesses that they run under the table, and claim a child who no longer lives in their house because the said child is living with their signifigant other and is 19 years old, but with all of this they still manage to get food stamps, medical, and possibly cash. Please tell me where that is right! It is people like that who have ruined the system that was put into place to help people who have fallen on hard times, not a person who is too damn lazy to get a job. I also think it is wrong that their are people who go to the doctor with the access card and get their pain pills that they abuse and/or selland because they are now addicted to the pills they choose to abuse they get food stamps cash and medical, because they have an addiction. This crap infuriates me! I can see people gettign help if they are on hard times, but when you hear someone on welfare say their paycheck will be in on such and such day and they are refurring to their cash assistance it makes me want to vomit on them. Sitting on your collecting welfare does not justify it as a "paycheck." My husband works anywhere from 15-18 hours a day just so we can pay our bills. That is just exactly for what I said to pay our bills. We have no left over money to go out to the bar go to dinner every night or go to the movies ect... But know damn well come welfare day these people are hitting up the vars and walmart acting like they won the lottery. It makes me sick to even think of. I am not saying all people on welfare are this way, but there is a great amount of them that are. One more thing that pisses me off is when you see these young people getting food stamps and they go to sheetz with 5 of their buddies and buy them all a loaded 12 inch sub, soda, the energy drinks (which actually are now no longer availiable to buy with food stamps), chips, candy bars, and all kinds of other junk food then they whip out their access card and use it. I loce knowing we are busting our asses so they can go to the store and buy the junk food that is more than likely to calm the munchies from the pot they just got done smoking. With that being said I say AMEN keep weeding out the ones abusing the system!

Some weeks I put in 70 to 80 hours a week because they couldn't get anyone else to do the job that I did. I payed in the system and now I'm getting a little help.So keep bashing the people who do get sick and can't work any more.

Every dollar of SNAP benefits generates $1.84 in the economy in terms of economic activity. If people are able to buy a little more in the grocery store, someone has to stock it, package it, shelve it, process it, ship it. All of those are jobs. It’s the most direct stimulus you can get in the economy during these tough times

Anonymous said...

The thing is that 99% of the people DON'T need/deserve it but get it and ABUSE it. The 1% that truely need it will be affected by this new law.

If you are the 1% that truely needs it and will be affected by this new law, seek out and report your neighbors and family that abuse the system.

Hold the welfare/SNAP program accountable.

Didn't we ask our leaders in PA to tighten their belts? Now that they are trying to save the taxpayers money, people are up in arms.

Once again, if you know of abuse, DEMAND that something be done. Help weed out the abusers and show that those who truely need the program have it there for them.

I see a lot of posts are pretty intensely bad against those that really have disabilities, even if they do have some special items like a playstation. People do learn save the money for things they need or even want. You could cut a lot of things and bring down the amount that we get and leave us with just bare eseentials; heat, phone, home, cool air, etc, but what do they do with themselves. Not everyone wants to read all day. That's about the only free/dirt-cheap thing.

But then I see other posts that are pointing towards people that may not really be too honest with the government. I saw one comment where a person says that someone they know gets fs and has a ps3, wii, new furnature, shops for a lot of things they don't need. I'm not saying it's bad to save up for such when you get fs, but if you go out and buy these things brand new and these items are particularly steep in price I do see the problem.

I have some of these things, of course this was before I lost my job. I'm not selling them. Why should I, if I earned them? Not wrong for people on fs to save for it, since these can be found for a reasonable price if you look hard enough for used items. In addition people with such things should at least wait a long time and pay off bills and necessities first and foremost.

$2000? Good reasonable limit. A little lower wouldn't hurt.

To post Thursday Jan. 12th 9:59 a.m.

Only being able to get a job in this town if you have a name? Seriously? I know many of the people working in all 3 of these places and you do not have to be popular to get a job, you just need to show you are willing to work for your money even if the pay is not good. These places hire people that are willing to work in order to stay off welfare. I do not think it is fair for the elderly that rely on this or the people who are truly and I mean truly on SSI to be penalized. I do believe that our government should evaluate each individual case. Maybe the government should create more jobs and hire people to do these kinds of evaluations.

But if you or your friends have tried to get into one of these 3 places maybe you didn't impress them and come across as someone who will be a hard worker and work for their money! Having a name in this town has nothing to do with it!

Some of these comments make me ashamed to be a resident of Potter County. Do you not understand that this is essentially going to hurt the elderly more than anything else??? Some elderly have saved all their lives to lessen the burden on their families when they pass. I can tell you from personal experience after just recently losing a loved one...the stress of figuring out how to pay for a proper burial when there is no savings, life insurance, etc is the last thing you want to worry about when you lose someone you love!!! And for those with no family to handle it.. Take their foodstamps away, deplete their savings, and then when they pass with NO family left to pay for their burial...the state ends up paying it anyway!
As far as having new things when you are on welfare...shame on you for thinking that just because you don't recieve any kind of help that you are the only one who deserves nice things! When it comes to those who do work and recieve a little help from welfare, half the time those fivrilous things are bought around income tax, the one time when they feel they give their kids and themselves the things everyone else brags about.
