Family Fitness Challenge Going Strong at Cole Memorial’s Wellness Center
COUDERSPORT, PA-- The Family Fitness Challenge at Cole Memorial is now in its fifth year at the Hospital’s Wellness Center in Coudersport. The program meets twice weekly after school and continues through the summer months. School-aged children and youth come to learn about nutrition and exercise and participate in a variety of fun and physically challenging activities. This program is taught by Donna Thomas, a certified personal trainer at the Wellness Center.
The Family Fitness Challenge begins at 3:15 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday when Donna meets the kids at the bus stop by the Hospital. They hike to the Wellness Center where everyone enjoys a healthy snack. Donna leads a brief interactive session on nutrition where children learn tips such as the importance of eating breakfast and understanding serving sizes. They spend the rest of the hour exercising. The session ends when parents arrive at 4:15 p.m.
“Each day we do different activities during the vigorous exercise game time,” says Donna Thomas. “The children use free weights, treadmills, bikes, rowing machines, and stability balls. They also spend time playing a variety of games inside and outside. Some of their favorites are dodge ball, steal the bacon, octopus, kickball and musical mats. During the year we have special outings to Lyman Lake where we kayak and hike, and to Cherry Springs where we geo-cache. In the winter we go sled riding and snowshoeing.”
The cost for a 10-week session of the Family Fitness Challenge is $50 for the first child and $25 for each additional child from the same family. This cost includes educational materials and snacks. Because Cole Memorial is committed to the health and fitness of all children and youth in the community, partial and full scholarships are available to any family in need.
