Galeton Presbyterian Church News

Galeton Presbyterian Church News, 11/11/12
By Martha Pennell,

The Gospel of Mark 12: 38-44 was the basis for Pastor Karl’s sermon on 11-11-12.

While in the temple Jesus noted how those who were rich cast much money into the treasury. A poor widow came and gave two pennies. Jesus told his disciples that the widow gave more than all the rest because they gave of their abundance and she gave all that she had to live on. The widow is not an example of good stewardship in the usual sense, not our shining example for giving, according to Pastor Karl.

In the Old Testament the people of God are charged with taking care of the poor people in their midst—aliens, orphans, and widows were to be protected and fed. The woman who gave two coins should not have had to. The religious leaders allowing her to do it were not doing as they should. God cares for the widows, orphans, and strangers and calls us and institutions of faith to do the same. We have already been given more than we need. Pastor Karl stated that in Jesus Christ God has already gone to the most powerless place—to death itself—where humanity is at its least. Through Christ he gives us all we have to live in our very life and has given those same things to the church.

Freya Miller was lay leader. Marge Rawson and Julie Jeffries were ushers. Ginny and Shelly Mainus are the prayer family for the week. The Worship Committee met on 11-7-12 to prepare for Advent season. Youth group will meet on Friday, October 16, 2012, in the Christian Education building from 6 to 8 pm. Stewardship deals with three T’s: time, treasure, and talent. Please consider them as you consider your Stewardship Commitment for 2013; please return pledge cards on Commitment Sunday, November 18th. The Nominating Committee will meet immediately after church on November 18th to nominate church leaders for 2013.
