Just as we started to put together plans and ideas for this group, we learned that the Galeton community building is being considered for sale, as of December 3/4 the borough offices including the local police station are being relocated across town and the doors to this building will be closed. It is in need of repair and the borough states they just cannot keep up with it any longer.
This being the place we were planning on hold most of our events for the Teen and Youth Program this is not what we wanted to hear, however think this may have been perfect timing for what we are doing.. We have already been approached by a handful of people that are willing to help do repairs so we can keep the building open. The community building has been here since the early 1920's, home to so many events and happenings it surely would be a shame to see it sold and or torn down. Teri Batterson from our group did attend a Borough meeting, voicing our concerns and the Galeton Borough decided they will have a contractor come in to assess the damage and what would be needed to bring the building up to code. If the damage/repair is to extensive/costly then they will be selling the building to the highest bidder.
We have started a petition in hopes to save our Community Building, it was published on Facebook this evening and will also be in local stores, our local bank and other businesses around Galeton. We invite and encourage anyone interested to sign the petition. Our community building is one of the most valuable pieces of history we have left in Galeton and closing, removing, or having it be for personal use only would be not just devastating to our community but would also take away a place for large groups in Galeton to gather for many events as we have had there in the past many years, another piece of our town, our history, our heritage gone...
I linked the page to the petition at the bottom, I know this is not up there with really big news but if we could just share it here on Facebook, the result may be good enough.
Thank you so much for your time,
