Local farmers kept their soil from washing away with the Hurricane!
With this hurricane, came rain; and with rain, there is mud. Many local farmers have avoided much of the mud, utilizing a practice called cover cropping. A cover crop is traditionally a fall planted crop used not only to cover soil from the effects of erosion, but also can retain soil nutrients and provide additional grain or forage. Next Wednesday, one can observe directly the effects of various cover crops planted at Phil Lehman’s Dairy Farm on State Road in Harrison Valley. Penn State Extension will be hosting this Cover Crops Field Day on November 7th beginning at 10 am. A light lunch will be served free of charge, simply call 814-274-8540 to let us know you will be attending.
