Paul Ceglia, the Allegany County man who claims to own part of Facebook, posted bail Wednesday as part of the criminal case against him.

Ceglia, who will be released at a later date and given an electronic monitoring device, is accused of trying to defraud Facebook in connection with his civil suit claiming partial ownership of the social networking giant.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan claim Ceglia “doctored, fabricated and destroyed evidence” to support his ownership claims regarding Facebook. A judge in New York City ordered that Ceglia should be kept in federal custody on wire and mail fraud charges unless he posted a $250,000 bond, backed by his family’s real estate holdings.

Ceglia’s civil suit is pending in Buffalo federal court.
