Potter County's Christmas House To Hold Open House Thursday

Potter County's Christmas House will be holding its annual open house on Thursday, November 8. The public is invited to stop by from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m at the little shop located on the corner of Main and Water Streets in Coudersport to enjoy soup, sandwiches and cookies and learn about the unique work of Christmas House.

Santa Claus is scheduled to make an appearance to greet children from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Christmas House is an all-volunteer organization which depends on the generosity of individuals, businesses and organizations to fulfill its mission.

Although Christmas House is open nearly year ‘round as a local charity helping to meet the needs of Potter County residents who find themselves in desperate circumstances, the volunteers move into high gear in October to orchestrate the distribution of hundreds of Christmas gifts all over the county. The Christmas House grew from the work of the late Gene Reese and his wife, Alyce, who had the vision to organize such an effort. A spokesperson says, "Though our leader, Alyce Reese, is no longer able to be actively involved in the day-to-day activities here, she has worked through the years to train new staff to continue the valuable mission of Christmas House."

Letters requesting names of children in need for the holiday season have been sent to area social service agencies and school nurses. Referrals from individuals are also welcome. Please contact Christmas House by calling (814) 274-0825 on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals from the northern Potter area (Genesee, Ulysses, Harrison Valley) should call 814-334-5212. The volunteers at Christmas House have set November 15 as the final date for submission of names and ages of children who will need gifts this holiday season.
