Ray E. Lewis, 83, of 19 Euclid Ave, Bradford, PA,  passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012, at his residence while in the company of his loving family.

Born March 13, 1929, in Bradford he was a son of the late Stillman S. and Freda (Knight) Lewis.

Mr. Lewis was a 1948 graduate of Bradford High School.

On April 8, 1950 in the Asbury United Methodist Church he married Mary F. (Walter) Lewis who survives.

He had been employed at Bell Telephone/Bell Atlantic for 36 years, retiring in 1983 as a Communications Consultant.

He was a pilot since 1948, holding FAA Certified Private, Commercial, Airline Transport, and Flight Instructor certificates with instrument and multi-engine ratings. He was also an FAA Pilot Examiner and FAA Safety Sentinel. He flew for 8 years with Chautauqua Airlines/ US Air Express of Jamestown, NY with seven of those years as Captain. He was awarded the prestigious Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, reserved for life-long aviation legends and astronauts.

He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 749 F&AM, Coudersport Consistory, the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Assoc., the Experimental Aircraft Assoc., and was a First Lt. in the Civil Air Patrol, as well as a charter member of McKean Aviation Assoc.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Shelley R. (Jay) Haines, of Lock Haven, two sons Mark S. (Sharon) Lewis, and Thomas M. (Tammy) Lewis, two sisters, Betty J. Dennis, and Velma A. Bridge, all of Bradford, one brother, William A. Lewis, of Beaver Falls, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Knight, Dick, and Ted.

Family will be receiving friends on Saturday, December 1, 2012, from 11:00 am to noon in the Asbury United Methodist Church where a memorial service will be held at noon with Rev. Max Miller, pastor of the Bradford Area Parish officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes.
