Sharpsville suffers heartbreaking loss to Gators in PIAA playoffs

---- — BRADFORD, Pa. — They say that “Turnabout is fair play.” But the way the PIAA Class A playoff game ended for the Sharpsville Blue Devils Friday night was almost unfair.

The Blue Devils played a phenomenal game against Matt Bodamer, the most prolific passer in the history of Pennsylvania football, and Port Allegany which Sharpsville beat in the PIAA Class A Quarterfinals last year.

But Bodamer and the Gators took advantage of an untimely turnover by Sharpsville to pull out almost a miracle 28-21 victory and gain revenge for last year’s tough defeat. Read more...

Unfair, my Big Fat A--. Give this team all the credit they deserve. Little ole' Port Allegany & Matt making headlines all over the place. I'm suprised he hasn't been mentioned yet on Jay Leno. They are doing great & I hope they keep going to the very top!!! GREAT GAME GATORS!!!!!Keep your heads up.

Whether we "deserved" to win or not, let's think about this. Do you know how hard some of us were praying? (I've never prayed for a football game in all my life). A lot more than just a win was riding on this, which I cannot discuss here. For me, my prayer was not even about winning. But we did win and let's just give the glory to whom it belongs. Our great God! This sort of thing may seem silly to some, but I firmly believe everything that happens is for a reason, including that last-minute fumble by Sharpsville. Each and every player, coaches and all concerned will be affected by this outcome, including Sharpsville, who played an awesome game. God uses all things for His good purposes. Gators and fans, let's just thank God for His grace. We owe Him everything.

Unfair? No,not in the least!!! Sharpsville did play a very good game, and gave our Gator team a run for it. HOWEVER, that said, there was so much one sided refereeing that it was almost humorous if it wasn't so darn frustrating. If anything was unfair, it was to our Gators. They were so many flags being thrown on my GATORS, and many obvious errors that were not thrown on the Sharpsville side. If anything, that fumble toward the end was God helping to make it fair for our side. Our Gators are rocking it out this year, and as a community we are so very PROUD!!! I may live 20 miles away, but I am still a huge part of the GATOR community. Best wishes for the upcoming game!!!

Go Gators! You are making the entire district proud!

Wish the Buffalo Bills would sign the PA quarter back up!!

10.36 from what i seen it wouldnt of even been close if sharpville didnt have the refs in thier pockets so just be happy they put as many points on the board as they did

PLEASE NOOOOOOOOOOOO, 3:33, I don't want him to become a LOSER!

Hey Jim, I heard the Clairton game is Friday at Deer Park HS. Any truth to the rumor and where is Deer Park HS. Searching only comes up with Texas and Wash. HS. And a petting zoo in Pa of course. lol

Oh Please! I agree with the referee thing! I think they came up on the bus with Sharpsville! And DESPITE the aweful calls, they were able to overcome adversity and win anyway! That should be the story. And anyone who things otherwise has no clue about those boys and this time!

The refs so had sharpsville back a picture in the Bradford era has a great picture of Nick Conway but did anyone notice the facemask on the port player ya neither did the one sided refs... And then when I personally said something to the refs about calling a fair game one of the refs grabbed me and then another one pushed me and told me to leave....but with that said and I am sure a lot more to say good luck boys great game let's keep it goin.....oh ya hey fans next time let's not give up you all sat in the stands and didn't cheer Alex should get a whhooo from us all everytime he makes a tackle and all of us should be yelling let's go gators quit sitting there and doing nothing show the support not by just showing up but yelling and cheering

Well ok lets just get some things straight here. First of all, sharpsville was a very big physical team. By far the best and fastest defense we have played all year. Second, it wasn't just a fumble. Number 11 wasn't just running and dropped the ball. It was a FORCED fumble. As a matter of fact, it was something that the Gators practiced with all the receivers and backs during their warm-ups, Stripping the ball. Oh and by the way, I agree a "W" is a "W'. The reason you aren't finding the location is ... the game will be played at Deer Lakes High School in Russellton, PA.

Oh The refs sure were for Sharpsville. There were many calls against the Gators na few against Sharpsville but the paper caught just one. I would like to see the replay and have some of the plays put in the paper to verify there many unfair calls against the Gators but great Job Gators you beat Sharpsville and the refs!!!!

7:49, I cheered, yelled, and jumped up and down so much I have a sore throat, and a pulled muscle in my left arm. :-) Everyone sitting around me was cheering, although I agree as a whole we didn't seem near as loud as the opposing fans. I was so impressed, and proud that so many showed up to show their support for our team! Go Gators!

@ 4:45 Deer Lakes is in Cheswick, PA - north of Pittsburgh. The address is

Pretty much looks like a home game for Clairton..... WTF ? Why not play the game in Clarion ?

Anonymous said...

Deer Lake HS is just north of Penn Hills, just outside of Pittsburg. It's obvious the PIAA wants to see Clairton return to the championship game, or else the game would have been at Slippery Rock or Clarion. They must not think Port deserves it.
Also, I got to disagree with the stuff people are saying about the refs and Port. I saw a lot of things called both ways. It might have been slightly against Port overall, but it wasn't one-sided.
I think people should start bitching and calling out the PIAA for the placement of this game. It's BULLSHIT to be played only a few miles from Clairton, especially at 7 oclock Friday night.

Its funny the football team gets a hero's welcome but our soldiers come home and the town barely even bats an eye...

Anonymous said...

That is total bull that the game is in their back yard. Does the PIAA really think this right? Why would it not be Clarion or Slippery Rock? Total bull !!

Let's hope the school dist allows the team to leave the day before so they're well rested and don't have to make a 4 hour trip, get off the bus and play. Hope they charter a bus also.

Gator Fan said...

Clairton has a 1 hour drive, Gators 3 1/2 hours. Whats fair about that. Why not play in Slippery Rock?

Anonymous said...

Sharpsville to Bradford is 3 hours. Port Allegany to Bradford 37 minutes. If you want to complain about the distance being close to a team, I'd complain about that one.

Anonymous said...

6:14, the reason Sharpsville came here this year is because Port went there last year. Get all your facts before you run your mouth.

Anonymous said...

How is Sharpesville, which is near Mercer, right on Interstate 80, 3 hours from Bradford, when Pittsburg is 3 hours too?

Anonymous said...

I'm just glad that Clairton has to play Port on a field they're not used to playing their playoff games on. This team normally sees playoff games at Heinz field.

Anonymous said...

Nice to see our entire county getting behind these boys...the Gators have done a phenomenal job this year and in spite of the obvious one sided odds at BAHS field...If the situation had been reveresed and a Gator made the fumble, you wouldn't hear anyone crying about this being unfair...they may be small town boys but they were raised knowing "its the nature of the game".

As an aside, while Bodamer is indeed a great player with raw talent, please remember ALL of the boys on the team who provide Bodamer with the stage on which to show case his talents...without them he'd be "just another high school quarterback"...you're only as good as the rest of your TEAM...378

Gotta love those Gators. To clear up the field location. It rotates from North to South just like it rotates from D10 to D9. Last year we played Sharpsville in Slippery Rock because it was D10s year to host the game and Slippery Rock put in the winning host bid. This year it was D9s turn to host and Bradford outbid Clarion University. The same for the Semi finials is true. Last year the game between Sharpsville and Clariton was in the North and was played at Slippery Rock. The year before it was in the South and was played at North Allegheny which is just North of Pittsburgh. The year before it was Slippery Rock and so on. This year it is in the South again but not at North Allegheny for some reason. Maybe because they are still in the playoffs themselves as a AAAA team. Maybe Deer Lake won the bid as they have recently modernized their facilities. Either way it was going to be in the South. It's just the rotation. My only problem with Deer Lake is that they only have stands on one side of the field. This is difficult as a fan because, since we are the away team this year, we will have to sit on the opposite side of the field from our team. Guess we will just have to shout a little louder.
GATORS!!!!!
GATOR FOOTBALL!!!!!

Thanks for that info Jason. Let's hope there's a big following of Gator fans to the game. Go Gators!

It's still bullshit that they're playing on Friday night instead of Saturday. Think of how much more gate would be generated with a Saturday game.
Hey Tanner… you're a Hubber. It's embarrassing to see you jumpin on the gatorwagon.

Tanner can jump on the Gatorwagon if he wants. Hubbers haven't had a wagon to jump on in years, haha
