Update On Murder Of Volunteer Firefighters

A gunman ambushed four volunteer firefighters responding to an intense pre-dawn house fire Monday morning outside Rochester, killing two, wounding two others and then killing himself, authorities said. Police used an armored vehicle to evacuate more than 30 nearby residents.

The gunman fired at the firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore in Webster, town Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first Webster police officer who arrived chased the suspect and exchanged gunfire with him, authorities said.

"It does appear it was a trap" for the first responders to the fire, Pickering said at a news conference.

The gunman, William Spengler, had served more than 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death in 1980 at the house next to where Monday's attack happened, Pickering said. Spengler, 62, was paroled in 1998 and had led a quiet life since, authorities said. Convicted felons are not allowed to possess weapons. Read more...

Must be the gun's fault.

Couldn't have been him that shot....he wasn't allowed to possess guns.....(insert sarcasm)

No this is not the guns fault, this is the fault of our judicial system backed by liberal bleeding hearts that do not see it as it is. When you kill someone you should forfit your life end of story. Had this guy remained in jail or went to the death chamber this would not have happened. The story is happening over and over.

It is amazing that gun laws on the books did not stop this convicted killer from possessing them to kill again. It is the idiot that killed and no law against guns could stop him. Wake up, any moron that wants a gun can get one. The law abiding person is the ones that will be penalized. Only in America.

Please, do not turn this into a gun discussion. Two selfless and courageous people who dedicate a large part of their lives to protecting others who they don't even know have been murdered by a maniac. Three more are injured. It doesn't matter why or how it happened. It only matters that it happened and now families will be without loved ones for the holidays. Fire fighters are aware that they perform a dangerous job, but being ambushed by a maniac with a gun should not be something that they have to worry about. God Bless. Thank you to all of the first responders who place themselves in harm's way every day protecting us.

People are animals. They are no tamer than lions who maul their trainers, elephants that trample crowds, or whales that eat sea-world employees.

Excuse me...but does NO ONE see a problem with this sicko only being in jail for 17 years for beating his 92 year old grandmother TO DEATH??? What? Was it ok because she was just some old lady..that extreme violent against women is an acceptable practice in NY...SHAME ON NEW YORK STATE for not frying this psycho in the electric chair...if he had been, then these heroic and innocent first responders and his sister would still be alive to day and he'd be in hell where he belongs!
