Coudersport Man Re-Charged With DUI/Possession

A PSP officer has refiled charges of DUI/Possession of Marihuana, and Paraphernalia charges against a Coudersport man.

Leslie Irvin Rolfe, 64, of 4 North Hollow, Coudersport, PA, was initially charged on April 2nd after his arrest on March 28, 2012 at 9:43 PM by Sgt. Jacob Rothermel, Jr. The charges were withdrawn by police at a District Court hearing on May 22, 2012..

Sgt. Rothermel, now of the Kane barracks,  refiled the charges recently in District Court 55-4-03. A preliminary hearing has been set for February 12 at 10:30 PM in front of District Judge Delores Weiss. Police did not elaborate on the reasons for the withdrawal and refiling of the charges.

Didn't Rothermel get transferred because of his witch hunting.

You are really going to charge a 64 year old man with possession of marijuana?

I swear some people become police just because they enjoy using the power to bully people.

I would hope that police and our criminal justice system would exhibit some common sense, compassion and understanding in this case. Mr. Rolfe would never want attention drawn to it but he and his wife took courageous, heroic action during the church shooting in Coudersport. I do not condone the use of marijuana and I do not support its legality, but I do believe justice should be tempered by mercy and a little sprinkle of common sense should be added to the equation. Maybe a small fine and probation but we as a society really do owe something to Les. He is a man of good character.

I am sorry but common sense is endangered in this area. Would like to know why it was withdrawn. Usually because it could not be proven. Just saying.

REALLY ALMOST A YEAR LATER THEY REFILE THAT IS CRAZY THE POLICE LET THE AUTHORITY GO TO THEIR HEAD. BUT THEY CAN ALWAYS DO AS THEY WANT.

January 21, 2013, " Maybe a small fine and probation..." Agree, but Les may not be guilty. Perhaps he is another one of Rothermel's victims.

If it was withdrawn why start it back up just saying apparently they didn't have enough proof or something let it go exspecially if he in his 60's

Just one more time a COP has done as he choose. First make marihuana legal. It is better for you then the chemically induced drugs you get from a doctor. Second after 3 months of charges being dropped, should not be allowed to refile charges. I do not know the cop or the person being charged, but MY OPINION IS: Leave the man alone or catch him again and do it right. If for whatever reason the cop is on a power trip. Call a lawyer and go to PSP and speak to the captain and file a complaint for harassment. Cops like this give all of them a bad name. Just a reminder to the police we are all human and nobody deserves to be treated differently, because of age, sex, religion, and color. Everyone has problems, some choose weed some choose alcohol, and some choose GOD. I hope that they clear this up quickly and the Judge follows the constitution. Good luck to all involved.

Wow, I am embarassed to be from the area to see these comments. I do not know the man or the cop but guess what, they have the right to file charges against him if they know/suspect he did something illegal (whether you agree with the law or not). Obviously, I do not know if he did have illegal drugs in his possession, but if he did, and they legally caught him with it, he deserves to go to court and be punished for it. Although he did do a courageous thing at the church, that should not give him immunity and let him break laws.

Well said 3:40 PM and to 7:51 PM, it is my understanding Mr.Rothermel was promoted - thus the move.

Why do people who haven't the first clue what they're talking about post here like they're authorities on the law??? News flash people: charges are often withdrawn at the officer's discretion if he or she concludes that the matter requires further investigation and then refiled at a later date if the case still warrants prosecution. Are they going to charge a 64 year old man with possession of marijuana? If he possessed it, hell yes they are. Any "good deeds" he may or may not have done do not cancel out the fact that he broke the law...whether or not it's a law that you feel is antiquated, it is still a LAW. As for the Trooper, it's not up to me or YOU to judge him. He is the one who will have to answer for his actions--right or wrong. However, if I were some of you, I'd be a little concerned...some of these remarks lean toward being pretty slanderous.
