Galeton Presbyterian Church News, 1-6-13

by Martha Pennell,

Lay leader for Epiphany Sunday, January 6, 2013, was Alyson Leach. Ushers were Martha Pennell and Ed Brown.

Choir rehearsal will be held in the Christian Education building on Saturday, January 12, 2013, starting at 10:15 am.

The Board of Deacons will meet after church next Sunday, January 13, 2013. For pastoral concerns and prayers please contact Pastor Shatto by email:; phone 435-2882 or cell phone 570-367-0041.

Pastor Tom read the Gospel of Matthew 2: 1-12 prior to his sermon titled, “The Riches of Christ”.

The wise men began to follow the star and offered riches to Jesus because they sensed his riches for them. Jesus shows us our true selves. Epiphany began to be a special day for the church in the fourth century; epiphany happens every day as people find Jesus. We should commemorate the wise men but realize the epiphany in our lives.

Pastor Tom explained; imagine being a slave for 50 years, then, because of God’s actions in the world freedom happens. God creates possibilities for human renewal. Our epiphany is that Jesus is the light of the world and his presence is curative and healing for the human race.

The wise men came from the east and were of another ethnicity. They did not care what country Jesus was in; Jesus is for the world. Arise! Get up and shine! Your light has come! How have we experienced epiphany in our lives since Jesus came into our hearts? Our lives have changed.

It is exciting to know ourselves, to ponder heredity and environment, but according to Pastor Tom it is doubly exciting to make the third stop, the exciting realization you have been influenced by Jesus! The key to eternal life, he brings us into the kingdom of God. Our purpose is to look for his light and to follow it. Know Jesus, make it known and tell others.

Let us follow Jesus and tell others about him!
