My husband has hunted with one of our beagles and the dog ran off and he left his coat hang in a tree went back a few hours later and the dog was there. Good luck. I will watch my area for them.
Usually a dog will return to the last place you were with it, so if you leave an article of your used clothing there, he will wait there. I have used this before and it worked. Don't know if its too late in this case but might be worth a try.
