“Just like John”

Galeton Presbyterian Church News, 1-13-13

by Martha Pennell, mpennell@northernpottersd.org

The Lord’s Baptism was recognized on 1-13-13. Appreciation and applause were given to Ed Brown for taking down the church Christmas tree and packing away the decorations. Alyson Leach was lay leader; Martha Pennell and Carol Smith were ushers.

The meeting of the Board of Deacons was postponed until next Sunday.

All committee and treasurer reports are due to the office as soon as possible. A Congregational meeting will be held after worship on January 27, 2013.

The basis of Pastor Tom’s sermon, “Just like John”, was the gospel of Luke 3: 15-17, 21-22.

People wondered if John was the Christ because he could baptize. As the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, John could have been a temple priest. Instead, he lived in the desert waiting for the Messiah.

He baptized Jesus and the Holy Spirit descended like a dove. The voice of the Lord spoke saying, this is the one who has it right—listen to him!

Pastor Tom stated that John yelled at people and called them a brood of vipers.

He desired Christ and wanted to be baptized with wind and fire, refreshed, so that productivity would continue.

We want to be what God created us to be. John needed the Messiah to achieve that. He needed to line up with the creator so he could live a new life. He speaks for us. We desire Christ, who takes us where we want to be and keep on growing. We are pressing on to perfection, according to Pastor Tom.

Jesus had great expectations when he walked into the water to be baptized by John. A new age on earth began; people aligning thoughts and actions on earth with God.

The Baptism of the Lord—the time is right for us and the key is Jesus.

Follow him! Never forget our baptism. We are partners for Jesus; bear witness to him. He is the key to life. Love like John and have great expectations for your world!
