Committees to Examine Child Protection Task Force Recommendations

Members of the House Children and Youth Committee and the House Judiciary Committee will conduct a joint hearing next week on the recommendations issued by the Task Force on Child Protection, which was formed in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The hearing will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Capitol.

The task force was charged with conducting a comprehensive review of the laws and procedures relating to the reporting of child abuse and the protection of the health and safety of children. Click here to learn more about the task force and read the final report.

House Committees Reorganize for 2013-14 Session

In Harrisburg this week, the House organized the membership of the 24 standing committees. In addition to being appointed chairman of the House Game and Fisheries Committee, I also will continue my service on the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. This committee focuses on the development of energy policy and has oversight of the Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. For updates about both of my committees, follow me on Facebook.

Protecting Second Amendment Rights

With the Obama administration, and some state legislatures, going after people’s second amendment rights, a gun rights rally will be held in Harrisburg again this spring. The Second Amendment Action Day is set for Tuesday, April 23, at 10 a.m. in the Main Capitol Rotunda. You may also sign a petition opposing any proposed gun controls here.

National leaders’ focus on tighter gun controls not only threatens our constitutional right to keep and bear arms; it also gives people a false sense of security that the awful tragedies that have taken place across the country in recent months and years will be prevented in the future. The truth is we need to focus on our mental health care system, and on keeping guns out of the hands of people who are seriously mentally ill. Taking guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens will not solve this problem.
