Sherwood to seek McKean County treasurer position

Sherwood to seek McKean County treasurer position

McKean County Acting Treasurer Mary Jo Sherwood has announced her intention to seek the Republican nomination for county treasurer in the May 2013 primary election. She has been with the county treasurer’s office for thirteen years and has served as acting treasurer since May 1, 2012 when former treasurer Nancy Evans retired. Prior to that, Sherwood was first deputy treasurer for ten years.

As first deputy Sherwood worked closely with the treasurer, she was involved in all functions of the treasurer’s office and was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the office. She maintained daily cash journals, recording all revenues and expenditures of the county government. She also managed upwards of sixty bank accounts, balancing them against the cash journals and performing monthly reconciliations. During her ten years as first deputy, whenever the treasurer was absent from the office Sherwood held all the powers and duties of the treasurer and was responsible for acting on the treasurer’s behalf.

Before being appointed first deputy, Sherwood held the positions of second deputy and clerk of the office of the treasurer. By holding every position in the treasurer’s office she enjoyed the opportunity to learn, perform and be responsible for all functions and obligations of the office. In addition, she assisted the treasurer in developing and implementing improved policies and procedures including advanced bookkeeping and accounting systems and technological improvements such as on-line customer services. Sherwood said she has ideas and plans for further improvements in these areas she is eager to implement.

During her thirteen years with the treasurer’s office Sherwood has completed numerous courses of instruction and participated in educational seminars related specifically to the duties and responsibilities of the treasurer’s office. She is also a certified Notary Public and often puts this skill to use in the treasurer’s office. Sherwood believes her experience and education make her uniquely and exceptionally well qualified for the position of county treasurer. She also has the support of former treasurer Nancy Evans who said, “Mary Jo is, without a doubt, the most qualified and knowledgeable person to assume the position of county treasurer. She was invaluable to me during my ten years as treasurer.”

Among her civic activities, Sherwood has been active in the Run or Walk for Someone Special, the Ronald McDonald Children Charities, the Make a Wish Foundation, and the American Cancer Society. She resides in Norwich Township with her husband, Kermit. They are the parents of three children and have five grandchildren.
