Basketball Fan Cited By Police After Admonishing Officials Over Bad Call

A Port Allegany man got upset over a call by officials at a basketball game at the Austin Area School Gymnasium on Wednesday at 9:25 PM and followed the officials into the locker room and gave them a piece of his mind.

State Police was called and Trooper Timothy Mix responded and cited James Frederick Gotshall, 79, of 47 Green Hollow, Port Allegany, PA, with Disorderly Conduct for allegedly shouting at and threatening the officials.  Gotshall will answer the charge in District Court 55-3-01.

Was it really a bad call or just a call that he did not like? Opinions are like... well we all know what they are like, we all have one.

I've known Jim Gotshall for decades and he's about as an upstanding citizen as they come. I hope the officials are more careful to get it right next time.

Anonymous said...

really? He should be banned for life from watching a basketball game.. WTF it's not like there going anywhere.. Wow he's 74 also???? He should know better it's just a fun sport don't ruin it for the kids... jerk

Anonymous said...

Who said it was a bad call?

Anonymous said...

Fine, upstanding citizens don't set bad examples by following and harassing sports officials after a game.

Anonymous said...

Wow!! Gotta give jim credit. He dont mince words. Chuckling a little bit. He was probably right but it is just a game.

There was an old man waving around a revolver at a junior softball game back in say early 2006. Wonder if its the same guy?

Anonymous said...

Not a Port Allegany fan, It was an Otto-Eldred/Austin game. His grandson plays for O-E.

I think maybe that people in Port Allegany should start taking their academics as seriously as their athletics. Maybe then some 4th graders in their district could read.

Right on!!! 10:01

As an adult watching kids games, if you can’t control your words and emotions, do everyone else a favor (especially the kids) and don’t attend.

If anyone has actually been going to all the games in District 9 they would realize that his anger is at every school. It seems the Refs this year are horrible at making decisions and keeping the flow of calls the same throughout the game like they are supposed to. If you actually read up on Reffing, you will see it follows the motto, an eye for an eye, so one bad call on one team, can be made up by calling another call on the other team. If you went to every game in the district you would feel his anger. Yes he went to far, but don't we all do that at some point in our lives?

It was senior night at Austin and after the game the team was having a party with their coach...who was UNABLE to attend due to dealing with this issue. He took away a moment for players and a coach and owes them an apology along with the Ref. Better yet maybe he needs to throw a party for them for ruining that time. We all have voiced our dismay at calls but really. Hopefully he does the right thing to this team and ref and shows his characterthat 9:27 posted about not to mention an apology to the school.

Alright, im sick of seeing these comments and how they are just saying he is a bad guy... i was atthe game && the refs just handed Austin the game.. the refs didnt call for anything when they had the ball.. no travling.. double dribbling... Otto Eldred worked their butts off but, no.. i wish Ottos ref handed the game too Otto on their senior.. && the refs had a problem with James son4 years ago also.. so the refs should be banned.. the ref kicked a JV player and James son out of the game.. so seriously.. know the whole story before judging.

Anonymous said...

He's 79! Do you think maybe his judgment is hindered?

Anonymous said...

this guy is jerk ..outstanding jerk and i have known him for years.yep as a jerk...

Anonymous said...

It was at an Eldred / Austin Game NOT a Gator Fan.

Anonymous said...

Was the Austin cop there? 10:54 pm same for Austin only we have non readers in all grades!

If a person has demonstrated that they can’t control themselves at a school function, and the school is aware of those actions, the school administrators should step up and do what they are paid to do.

Anonymous said...

I don't care what the game official did, what this dildine did was wrong. And anyone who is justifying his actions on here is an even bigger dildine. I refereed hundreds of games and I can tell you that some fans can be rude, but this guy takes the cake and they need to make an example out of him.

9:27:00 PM EST So that makes it right what Mr. Gotshall did? Are you nuts??? Upstanding citizen no longer and not a very good role model for the kids. Life isn't fair all the time.

Anonymous said...

To post 1:47 did you really know the reason he did what he did? It had nothing to do with calls it was about his son getting kicked out along with a JV player. I was there and attend four games a week and Austin would have beat them without the help of any ref...it was an even called game either way you see it. Someones ignorance is what this about. I have left many games disgusted with refs but didn't go over and attack them...did you witness that because I saw the whole thing and also heard his foul language during it in front of a student body...he should feel lucky he didn't get more out of it with all the witnesses..the ref is being over gracious with him. No excuse for it at all...wonder when the coach n players get their apology!

Anonymous said...

Could we please quit making excuses for people like this? "you don't know the whole story". You're right, i don't. But you don't know MY story and heck, I don't go and assault people. If I did, then I would expect to have the book at me. Since when is this an excuse to act terribly? Why do we keep making people vicitims? Every story has a comment about not knowing the whole story. I DON"T CARE. Having a bad upbringing and blah, blah is not an EXCUSE for poor behavior. I married a man who probably has a right to be a victim, but he is not. He strove to overcome a lousy childhood, has a respectful job, got himself through college and is a responsible adult. Get over it. Many people do get over it and move on.

Anonymous said...

I'm taking Jim's side on this one. That ref is horrible and rude... and needs to find a new job. To all the people on here that are saying "he's a bad guy, blah, blab,blah..." you haven't been to many basketball games this year. Varsity refs were not good at all!! Nice to see someone trying to stick up for those kids who work hard..

Anonymous said...

And a reminder for me; "There is know fool like an old fool"

Anonymous said...

It is my experience that those who offer a piece of their minds to officials at high school games appear to be giving one of the last pieces that they have left.

Anonymous said...

So post 1:47 obviously you weren't at Otto's girls senior might the next night...talk about 11 fouls to 0...that's handed a senior a game...joke...and the wonderful fan was there the next night doesn't seem like he was caught up in the moment most people would be embarrassed but you want to pat him on the back. Refs may get them wrong or right but you don't pursue them and get a pat on the back like this. Anyone who thinks it was ok what he did regardless of a nice guy or not is wrong.

Anonymous said...

apparently bad calls if Austin won!

Anonymous said...

If he's convicted, the judge should sentence him to referee a game.

Anonymous said...

You know their is a shortage of refs, so the people bad mouthing them refs can take the Piaa officials test just as easy as anyone else. If we are so bad let's get some fresh blood into the mix. We do it because we enjoy basketball and the thrill of competition. Lets set better examples for our student athletes

Anonymous said...

WE barely have enough refs to cover games...Some of you people are WAY OUT of hand....Here's a suggestion...GO TAKE YOUR Ref tests, because until you walked a day in there shoes you have NOTHING to complain about ALSO if you keep yelling crap from the stands and threating ppl you wont have ANY refs at all. Pull up your big person panties and act like an ADULT. There is NEVER a GOOD reason to go and verbally or physically attack a ref! EVER! Calm down, take a breath.....

matt said...

if you go to the otto games you would see how piss poor the refs are i hav eno time for the boneheads that dont know what there doing

Anonymous said...

Same Ref's that do Otto games are all over the LEAGUE...so what are you trying to say? 9:57 Time to put your ignorance to bed.

Carol said...

I was at the Austin/Otto game & also saw the whole incedent.First of all, Post 7:18, your a jerk too. Second the kid in the stands from Otto,(the Grandson) said something nasty to the Ref, who by the way was calling a fair game for both sides,so he stopped the game & threw him & his Daddy out. Then Grampa got mad about that, & after the game darted across the floor & slammed the Ref up against a metal exit door, heard through out the gym!! The Coach & a couple others broke it up, & escorted Grampa back across the floor to await the police. DISGUSTING SHOW in front of everyone. He should be cited, and never allowed back to, at least Austin. As someone said he was right back at Otto the next night, proud as a peacock, which shouldn't have been, and Austin as someone else said, did get cheated by one Ref in that game. So I guess they paid us back. BUT noone from Austin went after that Ref after the game. We graciously left the building. I don't care if he is 79 or 19, he made a COMPLETE ASS of himself, & disrupted our Senior night victory. He is a true JERK.

Anonymous said...

Huh, I was thinking the same thing about all these complainers ripping the Refs... You know the PIAA has applications for anyone that wants to help out with sporting events. Are you afraid to take a test??? I hear it's challenging so only a few smart ones pass.. I guess all you complainers about the Refs are the ones that can't pass it.

Anonymous said...

Pretty close Carol but it was not the dad of the student they kicked out,, as they should have. The refs accused the wrong guy! So the gentleman they kicked out missed the end of his SENIOR sons last game! Not that it was ok for grandpa to react the way he did but the Austin fans have no room to accuse any other schools fans of horrible behavior when the opposing schools buses have to have a police escort out of town to be safe, not just once but several times! All these so called adults,, for all teams need to grow up and set a good example for our younger generation. It's going to be a sad, sad world the way things are going.

I am amazed at what people will post or say when they do not have any idea as to the whole truth of a story. It's too bad you weren't there to listen to the troopers' interviews of the 'incident's participants instead of just jumping on here and running your mouths about a man when you don't have the facts. The facts are that the upstanding citizen here was Austin's coach who told the troopers' the truth, not some falsehood about threats or assaults on officials. A comment by a young man got him ejected from the game. The problem with your stories, however, is that I am NOT that young man's father. I AM a parent who was watching a fairly well-called game that night. At the time the young man was tossed, this official found a chance to 'get even' with me for pointing out a bad call he made at a game several weeks prior. After eyeballing me the entire game, he found his opportunity and fingered me instead of the young man's father who even stood up and admitted that it was him doing the yelling. The official still had me removed even though he was clearly wrong as the fans from both teams sitting in that area can attest. James Gotshall was there for both of these events so was well aware of this official's purposeful misidentification. By the way, this is all on video for any disbelievers. There was no argument over over a bad call on the court as some are saying but over this abuse of authority. After the game, Jim went to the refs door, which was open, and, as he tried to tell the official how wrong his actions were, was grabbed by the other official and slammed into the opposite wall. It was at this point that Austin's coach diffused the situation.
So, even though Jim should have found a different way to express his feelings, there were no threats or foul language and the only one assaulted was Jim.
Another thing that you should all be aware of is the fact that Jim was offered the chance to press charges against the referee for assaulting him but he has not at this time because he does not want this 'incident' to be taken any further nor the referees to be suspended.
So I would ask that you know the facts before you post.

James's son,
Tim Gotshall

For anyone who thinks that officiating sports is easy, please follow the following link, submit your application, study and take your exam, acquire all of the appropriate clearances, and join the ranks. I bet you might even be surprised when you actually read the rules books that maybe, just maybe, you aren't as well-versed in the game as you think you are. Officials are constantly barraged by fans yelling about rulings that are so far out of left field, it would appear that they are watching their very first game.

High school sports suck and should be done away with! Time to get back to reading, writing, and math in Austin were they no longer offer many classes such as computer skills, hand writing, typing, ect.

Anonymous said...

who was the ref?

Anonymous said...

1:27 you are clueless. Do away with High Schools sports? You're nuts. It is an after school activity, it does not take away from classroom work. If you look on the Honor Roll lists in the newspapers, most athletes are on that list. They are penalized by not being able to play if their grades are bad. For nonparticipating students there isn't any penalty for bad grade. Some student-athletes have to work harder in the classroom because they want to stay eligible to play.

I have knowned Jim for many many years. When I read this I know something is not right. Jim is not and never has been a violent person.I believe everything his son has stated. I have been at games and sat next to a mouth and they look at me like I said it.If a ref is watching what the players are doing nad attention on the game how can he pick out the exact person that is yelling?????in the stands???The direction it came from MAYBE but the exact person COME ON. I have attented enough games and some people point out the wrong person to save their neck. Jim don't let this bother you as anyone that knows you knows you are honest.

I can honestly say I am completely embarrassed to read about this rotten behavior, but I am not suprised, either. As a parent I have witnessed this family's mouthing off for years. And they aren't the only ones. There is a select group of parents who yell and scream the whole game, making the rest of us look bad. And I have been to other schools where the parents and fans are just as bad, if not worse. Grow up people! It's a game. You are teaching your children that it's ok to act like a bunch of idiots. Keep it up, and they will start playing them in locked gyms without spectators allowed. Sure the refs make mistakes. And we get upset. But yelling and acting like a bunch of two year olds only makes it worse. I went to the girls game on Thursday, too. The game was not handed to them in retalliation, that's just rediculous. It was a close game until the 3rd quarter, and called fairly, but the Otto girls were just better that night. Many of the fouls were committed just to stop the clock...it happens all the time when a team is behind. Stuff like this takes all the fun out of it.

No matter what happened during the game, it is NEVER EVER ok to approach the referees and admonish them after the game. There are avenues to complain in a legal, orderly way. I find it amusing that the son of the guy is trying to defend his father's behavior by saying the official was 'out to get him'. It never fails that people think they are so important or worthy of attention that their delusions of grandeur include the old saying "He was out to get me!! I'm such an authority on the game that I trump his calls. Look at me, look at me!!"
Parents need to let their kid play and check their egos at the door. You had your turn in the high school sports sunlight, or at least had the opportunity to do so, let it go and let the kids play. As far as the old man, there's no fool like an old fool. I hope he gets the book thrown at him and is banished from attending any future games. Even his presence would be an embarrassment to the school.

Tim said...

9:07 If you actually read my post, you should have understood that I didn't defend my father's actions. I merely explained the facts so that everyone would know that there were others who didn't act the way that they should have either and that you weren't given all the details. So, why don't you work them over for a bit and quit hiding behind anonymous posts.
