McKean Treasurer Announces New Services

McKean Treasurer Announces New Services
Acting County Treasurer Mary Jo Sherwood has announced the customer services available through the treasurer’s office. They now accept credit and debit cards. Also, dog licenses may be purchased on-line, and county real estate and per capita taxes collected by the treasurer’s office may be paid on-line. In addition, Bradford City taxpayers will have the option of paying their 2013 county real estate taxes in four installments, and they can do it on-line.

Customers visiting the treasurer’s office may use credit or debit cards to purchase any of the licenses and permits the treasurer’s office sells. These include dog licenses, hunting and fishing licenses, bingo and small games of chance permits, sportmen’s pistol permits and also notary services. In addition, Bradford City taxpayers may pay their county real estate and per capita taxes at the treasurer’s office using a credit or debit card.

For 2013, Bradford City taxpayers have the option of paying their county real estate taxes in four installments. Bradford City taxpayers who want to pay on the installment plan must make their first payment by March 15, 2013. Subsequent payments must be made by April 30, June 15 and July 31. If any of the subsequent installment payments are late, a ten percent penalty is added. Payment of the first installment by March 15 is evidence of intention to pay on the installment plan, otherwise the taxes are due and payable in full.

Taxpayers who pay their taxes in full may pay at a two percent discount during February and March. During April and May the face amount of the tax bill is payable. After May 31, 2013 a ten percent penalty is added.

On-line tax payments and installment payments of county taxes are options available only to Bradford City taxpayers at this time because the county treasurer’s office
collects only county taxes and only from Bradford City taxpayers. Each of the other
twenty-one local municipalities in the county has their own elected tax collector who collects county, school and local taxes from their local taxpayers.

To buy a dog license on-line, go to the Treasurer’s Department on the county web site and follow the links. All dogs aged three months and older must be licensed annually, unless the dog has a lifetime license. The 2013 dog licenses are now on sale on-line and at the treasurer’s office. Dog licenses may also be purchased by mail by going to the county web site, downloading and completing an application and mailing it to the treasurer’s office with the appropriate fee.

When a payment is made using a credit or debit card, whether on-line or in the treasurer’s office, there is a convenience fee charged by the credit card issuer to cover the cost of processing the payment. Credit card companies must notify the card holder of the fee prior to processing the transaction. The user will then have the opportunity to cancel the payment.

The fee will be billed separate from the transaction amount on the cardholder’s statement. Neither the treasurer’s office nor McKean County receive any portion of the card issuer’s convenience fee.

For any questions please contact the treasurer’s office at 887-3220 or via the county web site.
