Mary Jane Hayes, 81, Addison, NY

Mary Jane Hayes, age 81 of Addison, NY, went home to her Lord and Savior, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, June 21, 2013 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.

Mary Jane was born on February 15, 1932, in Johnson City, NY, to the late Edgar Melvin and Dorothy Mae Lee.

They moved to Littlestown, PA, just 8 miles from Gettysburg, where Mary Jane grew up and had many fond memories of her childhood. She became quite a Civil War buff and fan of Abraham Lincoln. Mary Jane also recounted, with much fondness, the memory of her parents taking her to see "Gone with the Wind" when it debuted in the theatre in 1939, her favorite movie of all time which helped contribute to her love of the Civil War era.

When Mary Jane was a teenager, her family moved to Little Marsh, PA. She worked making ice cream sundaes and sodas in the drug store in Westfield, PA, after school and on weekends. It was there she met the love of her life, Oakley Harold Hayes. They were married on Sept. 7, 1948, and settled in Westfield, PA, They were blessed with 3 children. In 1970, Oakley and Mary Jane and their three children moved to Addison, NY, where Oakley was owner and editor of the Addison Post, Inc. with Mary Jane working along his side. After moving to New York State, Mary Jane became an avid NY Mets baseball fan. She also had a passion for miniatures and dollhouses.

Her children recall times when they came home from school and their mother would be ironing clothes while listening to classical music and the theme song "My Own True Love" from the movie, "Gone with the Wind." Mary Jane lost her hearing later in life and was unable to enjoy her music.

Mary Jane was a compassionate, caring, and loving mother and grandmother who instilled many wonderful Christian values in her children, grandchildren and family. She will be greatly missed by her family but they know she’s now happy and whole again in Heaven with her own true love, Oakley, and able to hear Jesus say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

She is survived by her three beloved children and their spouses: Dawn(Gene) Austin of Horseheads, NY, Oakley (Jewell) Hayes, Jr. of Addison, NY, Debbie (Kirk) Beaver of Addison, NY; five grandchildren: Jed (Jun) Diffenderfer of California, Joseph (Mindy) Hayes of Corning, NY, Amanda (Daniel) Knaisch of Addison, NY, Jeremy (Joel) Hayes of Illinois, Matthew (Allison) Beaver of Addison; six great-grandchildren: Abbie, Brent, Johnny, Jaica, Griffin, and Jaleesa, three sisters: Betty (JC) Harris of California, Shirley (Bill) Archer of Horseheads, NY, Barbara (Bob) Simmons of Westfield, PA and one brother: Terry (Roberta) Lee of Addison, NY, step family: Jeff, Ursula, Allison, Reasa, Laine, Bryson, Melissa, Randy, Julie, Amanda, Rylan, Kaira, Kaydence, Korbyn, Kamryn, Breckyn, and Jaron; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mary Jane was predeceased by her husband, Oakley Harold Hayes, Sr., on Oct. 15, 2011.
