Civil War commemorations and re-enactors are practically synonymous, but as the Gettysburg hoopla began last week, the Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College said very publicly the commemoration would be better without all the men in blue and gray pretending to be soldiers.

On June 29, the Wall Street Journal ran a story that said, "Peter Carmichael, a professor of history at Gettysburg College, calls re-enactments an 'unfortunate distraction' from a deeper understanding of the Civil War, including the motivations of those who fought and its legacy."

Later that same night, Carmichael quoted himself to me at the media reception in Gettysburg sponsored by the college: "unfortunate distraction."  The rest of the story....

Federal Grants Providing New Fire Radios In Allegany County

More than $1M announced for Allegany Co. fire radios

By Bob Clark
Olean Times Herald

FILLMORE — More than a dozen Allegany County fire departments will receive more than $1 million combined from the federal government for new fire radios.

Allegany County fire departments have now received three Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Act grants — with two grants covering 17 county fire and ambulance departments in June — said county Fire Coordinator Jeffrey Luckey.

The first grant, approved in June, covered fire departments in county fire districts 1, 2 and 5, Mr. Luckey said, and amounts to $769,381 in aid.

“That’ll purchase 101 mobile (vehicle-mount) radios, 296 portable radios and 566 pagers,” Mr. Luckey said.  Read more...

Update for Route 255 Betterment Work near I-80/DuBois, Week of July 8

Clearfield County
Update for Route 255 Betterment Work near I-80/DuBois, Week of July 8

DuBois - Work to improve Route 255 near the I-80 DuBois/101 interchange that began in April, is continuing. When work completes in mid-October, a smoother roadway surface and new traffic signals at the I-80 ramps will provide area drivers with more efficient travel and improved traffic flow.

Work the week of July 8 will feature the following activity:

• The contractor will work between the hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. between Monday, July 8, and Friday, July 12

• Roadway patching and waterline work will take place between the eastbound I-80 ramps on Route 255 to Treasure Lake. Patching work is expected to complete next week, however the waterline work will continue.

• Work to widen the roadway will soon begin for this project, perhaps as early as next week.

Motorists should expect to encounter flaggers in the work zone and significant travel delays. Drivers should give themselves extra time to travel through the area. PennDOT reminds drivers to remain alert and proceed through the work zone with caution.

Overall work on Route 255 will include milling and paving, bridge deck repair, cleaning and upgrading of pipe culverts and inlets, water-line extension, and installation of new traffic signals at the I-80 ramps.

All work is weather and schedule dependent. Work is scheduled to end by mid-October of this year. New Enterprise Stone and Lime Inc. is the contractor on this $3.4 million project.

Cope said, “One pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three people, who might be your neighbors, co-workers, or family members, and the most needed type of blood is the one that is not on the shelves. ”

No appointment is needed to save a life. Walk-ins are welcome at all Community Blood Bank blood drives.

Tuesday, July 9 – Westfield Community Room from Noon – 5 PM

Wednesday, July 10 – Galeton High School Cafeteria  from Noon - 5 PM

The Galeton Area School District is holding an urgent meeting on Mon, July 8

CITIZENS OF GALETON

The Galeton Area School District is holding an urgent meeting on Mon, July 8 at 7:00 pm at the school. The 2013–14 budget was rejected at the regular meeting on June 10. Due to blunders by the Administration, proper notice for a subsequent meeting to vote on the 2013-14 budget was not given until June 26, thereby preventing the District from adopting a budget prior to the close of the last fiscal year. Accounts for the District are now locked, because the PA Department of Education prohibits the spending of any money unless there is a properly adopted budget in place.

The Superintendent is trying to force the same $6,634,381 budget that he could not pass on June 10 down the public’s throat by scheduling consecutive meetings on July 8, 9 and 10. He wants to preserve the Administration’s $596,714 piece of the pie – nearly 10% of the entire budget - for at least another year. That is the highest cost per student of any school district in the state (Allentown Morning Call). If he doesn’t succeed on the 8th, he’ll try again on the 9th and, if necessary, the 10th. He’ll keep trying and trying until he gets his way. You have a right to see the budget.

Come out and be heard! It’s YOUR school district!

Splash Run coming to Northern Potter School District

The Potter County Suicide Prevention Task Force is excited to introduce the Splash Run coming to Northern Potter School District on September 7, 2013.

This 5k run is open to the public and is a fundraising event to assist the task force in bringing Rachel’s Challenge programming to Potter County during the 2013-2014 school year. The Splash run is a run where runners get splashed with various colors as they run or walk through the course. There will be various color stations throughout the event.

This is an exciting way to help people stay active as we head into the fall and is also a great way to acknowledge Suicide Prevention Week throughout the County. The race is not a competitive race and anyone interested in either walking or running is welcome.

The race will take place rain or shine. Runners are encouraged to pre- register for the event by visiting www.dickinsoncenter.org. The cost of the race is $40 pre-registered and $45 the day of the race. The race fee is not refundable.

Registration the day of the event starts at 9:00am and the 5k starts at 10:00am. Registration fee includes a
t-shirt and color. If you would like to help questions can be directed to Debbie Hamilton at 814-274-8651. For more information on Rachel’s Challenge please visit www.rachelschallenge.org
