The Woodsmen Show, celebrating the rich lumber history of Potter County, starts Friday at Cherry Springs State Park on Route 44. It is sponsored by the Galeton Rotary Club. Grounds open daily at 9 AM.

TURTLEPOINT- Donald A. McNeil, 79, of Long Hollow Rd., passed away Friday (July 31, 2015) in the Olean General Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born on October 11, 1935, in Olean, NY, he was a son of Clair F. and Hazel G. Plummer McNeil. On January 23, 1971, in Port Allegany, he married Phyllis E. Abel.

He was a longtime resident of the area and a graduate of the Port Allegany High School, Class o 1953.

Don started his career at Backus Co., Smethport, after graduation working on a government secret project for the first satellite system ever launched. Afterwards he worked for Pierce Glass Co. (now Ardagh Glass) Port Allegany for 24 years, as a mouldmaker, before transferring to the company’s Lincoln. IL facility for 8 years. Thereafter he was employed as a mouldmaker for Owens-Illinois Glass in Brockway, PA, retiring in 2001.

Mr. McNeil was a past member and steward of the American Flint Glass Workers International Union, past president of the Pierce Glass Credit Union, member of F. & A.M. Liberty Lodge 505, Port Allegany, Coudersport Consistory, Canoe Fish & Game Club, and the National Rifle Association. 

 He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and an enthusiast for American history and Civil War historian. He enjoyed his beloved Labrador, Luci.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Phyllis, are two sons, Kim (Christeena) McNeil of Eldred, Timothy (Dawn) McNeil of Turtlepoint; a daughter, Amy (Joe) Shelley of Port Allegany; a stepdaughter, Robin (Joe) Formoso of Cincinnati, OH; a stepson, Whitey (Sally) Brundage of Port Allegany; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna May Taylor of Port Allegany; and a brother, Ronald McNeil of Turtlepoint; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Robert McNeil.

Friends will be received from 11a.m. -2 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 4, 2015) in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. H.D, Youngblood, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Annin Creek Cemetery, Turtlepoint.

Memorials can be made to the Chestnut Street Baptist Church or Port Area Ambulance Service.

Dr. Edwin D. Schott

Port Allegany -Dr. Edwin D. Schott, 91, of, Coudersport, PA, died Friday (July 31, 2015) in the Cole Memorial, Coudersport.

He was born May 11, 1924 in Durant City, a son of Edwin D and Victoria Cannon Schott. On Sept. 25, 1945 in Galeton, PA, he married Marjorie L. Richar, who survives.

Dr. Schott was a 1942 graduate of Galeton High School. In 1951 he received his Doctorate from Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia. He practiced in Galeton, Coudersport and Port Allegany, from 1951 -1986.

Dr. Schott was a member of the Coudersport Golf Club, F&AM Blue Lodge # 602 of Coudersport, the Coudersport Consistory, the Optometry Association and the Coudersport Free Methodist Church. He was past Captain in the Salvation Army and served on the Board of Directors of Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and Citizens Trust Co.

He was a member of the Coudersport Rotary Club. He enjoyed golf, hunting and fishing and always had a story to make you smile.

WWII Veteran

Dr. Schott was a veteran having served with the US Army Air Corps during WWII.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by

Olean Area Girls Competed In Niagara Falls 10 U Tournament



This is our Olean area girls 10u softball team competed last weekend in the Niagara Falls invitational 10u tournament. The team went five for five in a six team tournament. Not one team scored more than four runs in any game.

 Breanna heller age 10, struck out 53 batters. Breanna also had a grand slam. Kylie kiener had three home runs and a grand slam.

Jacqueline Lois Inscho Caccia of Galeton, PA, age 78, passed away in the early morning hours of August 1, 2015, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA, due to complications related to heart surgery. 

Jackie, as her friends and family called her, was born in Elmira, NY on March 5, 1937 to Doris Karhan and Clifton (Skip) Inscho. She married Joel Rudolph Caccia on June 8, 1958.

Jackie was a graduate of Elmira Southside High School and attended Alfred University. 

Jackie held positions with Sears and Roebuck, and Corning Glass, as well as being self-employed as a decorator. 

She was a past volunteer for the Red Cross and Tanglewood Nature Center in Elmira and was active in the Red Hat Society, Germania Luncheon Club, and the Germania Non-Denominational Church.

 Jackie was an avid gardener who enjoyed not only vegetable gardening but also growing both garden variety and wild flowers. 

During her lifetime, Jackie lived in Elmira, NY, Allentown, PA and was also part of one of the original families residing in Carter Camp, PA. 

Surviving family members include her husband, Joel Rudolph Caccia; two sons and their families, Joel R. Caccia, of Phoenix, AZ, and his wife, Lynn Beairsto Caccia and grandson, Cole Beairsto, and Randall Todd Caccia, of Johnsonville, NY and his wife, Amy Archer Caccia and granddaughters, Emma and Anna Caccia; a sister, Patricia Manns; nieces, Katherine and Kristine; and a nephew, Mark. 

Jackie was predeceased by her mother and father. 

A Memorial Service will be held at the Germania Non-Denominational Church on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 11:00am. 

Donations can be made in Jackie’s memory to the Germania Non-Denominational Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

AUSTIN, PA---Norma L. Roseman, 90, a lifelong resident of Austin, passed away Friday, July 31, 2015 in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, after a period of declining health.

Born March 24, 1925 in Austin, she was a daughter of Fraley J. and Edith G. Allison VanWhy. On April 19, 1947 she married Tony J. Roseman, who passed away August 26, 1971. 

Mrs. Roseman was a graduate of Austin High School. She was employed for over 35 years at Emporium Specialties in Austin.

Mrs. Roseman was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. Her greatest love was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl A. (Francis) Burgett of North Tonawanda, NY and Debra M. (Darwin) Reese of Austin; two granddaughters, Jennifer L. (Curt) Leightley of Austin and Magen L. Ludwig of Coudersport; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas O. Leightley, Noah A. Leightley, and Elyssa R. Leightley, all of Austin; two sisters, Doris C. Fowler of Austin and Aldean Cochran of Turtlepoint; many nieces and nephews, including Mark VanWhy of Austin; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Roseman was predeceased by three brothers, Fred VanWhy, Ed VanWhy, and Otis Davenport; and a sister, Lucille Cochran.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Turner Street, Austin, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon following visitation with the Rev. Joseph Dougherty, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Augustine/St. Paul Cemetery, Austin.

Six area students receive John J. Murphy Family Scholarship

Six area students will each receive $10,000 in scholarship aid from the John J. Murphy Family Scholarship Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
2015 John J. Murphy Family Scholarship recipients include:
  • Geoffrey Broadbent of Olean High School, pursuing a biology/pre-med major at St. Bonaventure University;
  • Christopher Lashway of Port Allegany High School, pursuing industrial engineering at Penn State Erie, Behrend College;
  • Timothy “TJ” McMullen of Allegany-Limestone High School, pursuing mechanical engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology;
  • Monica Moses of Olean High School, pursuing a chemistry major at St. John Fisher College,
  • Haley Ruffner of Allegany-Limestone High School, pursuing an English major with a business minor at Alfred University; and

Named in honor of the late John J. “Jack” Murphy, Olean native and former CEO and Chairman of Dresser Industries, this scholarship was established initially through a grant from the Communities Foundation of Texas.

“This scholarship has now been awarded to 44 students with grants totaling $290,000 since it was established at the Foundation in 2008,” said Karen Niemic Buchheit, Community Foundation executive director.

“Mr. Murphy was extremely generous in his efforts to help our area’s best and brightest students to continue their educations,” she added. “We are glad to administer this scholarship, carrying on his legacy.”

Each year the John J. Murphy Family Scholarship is awarded to six graduating high school seniors from the greater Olean area, according to Ms. Buchheit.

Preferred candidates are students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing, engineering or business.
Selection criteria includes scholastic achievement, school and community participation, demonstrated leadership potential and financial need. Consideration is also given to a student whose family members are employed by or have retired from Dresser-Rand in Olean, Ms. Buchheit noted.

100th Anniversary: 2015 is the 100th anniversary of the Oswayo Valley Memorial Library. In 1915 the Shinglehouse Woman’s Club established a public library and free reading room. As a thank you to our patrons who support the library, the Library Board is sponsoring a monthly thank you raffle. Each month, beginning in January 2015 and ending in December 2015, a different raffle will be featured. All registered patrons will be entered once. Patrons will earn an additional entry each day that they use the library. The monthly drawing will take place on the LAST Friday of each month at 5:30 p.m. After the December drawing, a grand prize thank you drawing will take place. SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---Frances L. Palumbo, 83, of Shinglehouse, formerly of Philadelphia, passed away at home with her loving family by her side on Friday, July 31, 2015 after a short illness.

Born September 30, 1931 in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of Bernard and Louise R. Fox Lare. On February 23, 1952 in St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Philadelphia, she married Charles A. Palumbo, who passed away on April 30, 1971.

For many years Mrs. Palumbo was employed by Prudential Life Insurance Company as a fraud investigator. After retiring from Prudential she was a personal caregiver for several years.

Mrs. Palumbo was a devoted loving mother. She was also a loving caregiver to her family and to people she didn’t even know. 

Surviving are a daughter, Francine L. (Lynn) Perkins of Shinglehouse; a son, Anthony C. Palumbo of Croydon; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Bernadette Black of Philadelphia; two brothers, James Lare and Charles Lare; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Palumbo was predeceased by a daughter, Lynn Jacobs; and several siblings.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on Monday, August 3, 2015 at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse where funeral services will follow at 12 noon with the Rev. Fred Kemp, pastor of the Potter County Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Chrystal Cemetery, Eleven Mile, Pa.

64th Annual Woodsmen's Show At Cherry Springs State Park July 31, August 1 & 2

The Woodsmen Show, celebrating the rich lumber history of Potter County, starts Friday at Cherry Springs State Park on Route 44. It is sponsored by the Galeton Rotary Club. Grounds open daily at 9 AM.





The three day weekend offers a bit of excitement for everyone. Every event has a connection to Potter County's rich lumbering history.

Come see the top lumberjacks in the country come to Cherry Springs State Park to compete in events like cross cut saw, springboard, axe throwing and tree felling - the same events featured in the popular outdoor games on TV.

Witness ordinary people test their own skills while rubbing elbows with the pros. Some of the events are listed below:
