Bridge Repair near Cherry Springs Will Require Detour

Closure/detour will run August 22 through September 30

Galeton, PA – Beginning Monday, August 22, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will be working to repair a bridge in West Branch Township and a detour will be in place. The bridge is located on Route 2002 about 2 miles northeast of the village of Cherry Springs. Repairing the bridge will extend its useful life and allow PennDOT to remove it from Potter County’s structurally deficient list.

The 17-foot bridge was originally built in 1938 and spans the West Branch of Pine Creek. It carries an average of just over 110 vehicles each day.

Crews from PennDOT Potter County Maintenance will be working to replace concrete beams on the bridge. During this work, the bridge will be closed to traffic and drivers will need to follow a detour. From Route 2002, PennDOT’s official detour directs drivers to use Routes 44, 144 and Route 6. Part of the detour takes traffic into Galeton Borough. Drivers familiar with the area may choose to use alternate routes.

The project is scheduled to run through September 30. Should work progress allow, PennDOT will re-open the bridge ahead of schedule. All work is weather dependent.

Thanks very much PennDot for saying for months and months that this work would not start until after the Star Party being held over Labor Day weekend. Over 500 participants will not be able to shop in the Galeton Area and benefit from this massive tourism event. I hope that the merchants of Galeton let their voices be heard on this one because there is no GOOD reason why this can't be delayed one week!
