A free stargazing program is being offered on two different dates at Cherry Springs State Park at 4639 Cherry Springs Road, 11.8 miles or about 20 minutes from Galeton via West Branch Road and 15.1 miles or about 21 minutes from Coudersport using Route 44.

From 9:15-10:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 19 and 20 will be the Summer Stars Night Sky Tour. Learn about the summer constellations during a laser-guided tour by park staff and explore the planets, star clusters and other deep space objects through the park’s telescopes at the Cherry Springs State Park Night Sky Viewing Area. This program is free.

Route 44 between the village of Oleona and the Lycoming County line is closed as work continues to rehabilitate more than 50 miles of weight-restricted roadway on Routes 44 and 144 in Potter County. A detour using Routes 220, 120 and 144 is in place. Work is expected to continue into September. Those traveling from Jersey Shore and points south should take Route 287 to Wellsboro or Route 15 to Mansfield. Then take Route 6 west to Galeton and follow signs to the park.

All visitors who plan to view the night skies are asked to arrive at the park before dark. People may observe on their own and do not have to attend a stargazing program. If it rains, programs are cancelled.

Check for 48-hour cloud cover forecasts and viewing conditions.

Pre-registration for the Summer Stars Night Sky Tour is required. To pre-register online visit or call (814) 435-1037 or (814) 435-5010.
