Thomas Freed, 83, a longtime resident of Genesee, PA, formerly of Red Hill

GENESEE, PA---Thomas Freed, 83, a longtime resident of Genesee, formerly of Red Hill, passed away in his home with his loving family by his side on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, under the care of the Potter County Hospice, after a short illness.

Korean war veteran
Born on February 24, 1933 in Lansdale, he was a son of Paul and Eva Fox Freed. On September 19, 1953 in Elkton, Maryland, he married Barbara L. Myers, who survives.

He was a graduate of Lansdale High School, Class of 1951. Tom was a U.S. Army veteran proudly serving from 1953 to 1955, during the Korean War. He retired after 25 years of service from Schlosser Steel Inc. in Hatfield.

Tom was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Shinglehouse, Raymond Richar VFW Post 6611, Galeton, Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530, and a life member of Paletown Rod and Gun Club. He was enjoyed baking and was famous for his cheesecakes. 

 He was an avid hunter, enjoyed gardening, fishing, and nature watching. He was a genuine friend to many, often taking neighbors and friends to doctor’s appointments and helping in any way he was able.

Surviving besides his wife are five children, Lynne B. Blackman of Herford, Andrew T. Freed of Lansford, Glenn A. (Susie) Freed of Chico, California, Mark J. (Kelly) Freed of Middleport, and Jo Anne M. (Colin) Chernowetz of Bethlehem; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five brothers, Paul (Mary) Freed, Alphonsus (Mary) Freed, Richard (Lon) Freed, James (Carole) Freed, and William (Barbara) Freed; a sister, Cecelia Morton; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by two brothers, John and Joseph; and a sister, Anna Freed.

In keeping with Tom’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral services. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sartwell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art, PO Box 33, Millersburg, PA 17061; the Paletown Rod and Gun Club, Inc., 1210 Doylestown Pike, Quakertown, PA 18961; or to the Potter County Hospice, 269 Route 6 West, Coudersport, PA 16915.

Tom’s family has entrusted his care to the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
