In February this year, there was a meet and greet held in State College for new Sheriffs to meet the other Sheriffs of the state. I met C. J. Walters at this gathering and we talked about different avenues to obtain grants, and monies for equipment. I explained to him that our department was in need of ballistic vests.
Two days after this meeting, he and his Chief Deputy, David Hart appeared in my office with several vest for us to borrow until we were able to purchase ones of our own. We talked about vest grants and he indicated that he and his office would like to do a raffle to help us raise enough money for vests and other equipment we needed to purchase.
I contacted several businesses in Potter County requesting donations to use for this raffle. Perry’s Country Store, located in Austin, PA donated a firearm and allowed me to purchase a second firearm at cost. John’s Gun Shop in Galeton, PA donated a firearm and allowed me to purchase a second firearm at cost. Howard’s Inc. of Coudersport, PA donated a leaf blower and Larry’s Sports Center of Galeton, PA donated several motorcycle related items.
I contacted Sheriff Walters about the items to be used in the raffle. He had tickets printed for the raffle and distributed them for sale through the Bradford County Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association. The raffle was a huge success and ended when the drawing occurred at the Bradford County Sheriff’s Annual Golf outing on August 5th, 2016.
Sheriff Walters also spoke with several other agencies during the course of selling tickets for the raffle and was able to secure several large donations for this cause. He obtained a $2500. donation from the J. Robert and Alberta C. Rodgers Memorial Charitable Trust of Butler, PA, the Canton Legion Post #303 donated $1000. and the VFW Post 714 of Canton, PA made a $500. donation.
All total between the raffle and the above listed donations the Bradford County Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association presented the Potter County Sheriff’s Department a check in the amount of $12,200.
The Potter County Sheriff’s Department would like to express a huge thank you to Sheriff Walters, the Bradford Co Sheriff’s Department, the Bradford County Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association, and to all those that purchased a raffle ticket. Our department will have much needed equipment to do our job more proficiently and safely due to your assistance.
