Members of the Mountain Modelaires, a radio control airplane club, will be holding a float fly on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Hills Creek State Park, 111 Spillway Road in Charleston Township, 8.3 miles northeast of Wellsboro via Charleston Street and Hills Creek Lake Road.

The float fly will be held in the park’s beach area. Club members and guest pilots will fly radio control foam or light balsa wood aircraft weighing between 1½ and 9 pounds. The RC planes will take off and land on Hills Creek Lake. Each flight will be five to 10 minutes. Only one plane will fly at a time.

There are different types of float airplanes. The body of a small electric RC plane serves as the “float” and allows it to take off and land on the water. The wheels are removed from land-based RC airplanes and replaced with a set of dual floats that are usually made of foam or balsa wood and waterproofed.

This free event will be cancelled if it rains or there is too much wind.

Those who want to watch are welcome to attend.

The Mountain Modelaires have scheduled two other float flys at Hills Creek State Park. Weather permitting, they will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 8 and 15.
