202 years ago, Francis Scott Key wrote the words to a poem The Defense of Fort McHenry after witnessing one of the most horrific battles in the War of 1812. Later the words would be set to music and eventually become known as the STAR SPANGLED BANNER and eventually named the National Anthem of the United States of America.

Students at Oswayo Valley Elementary school celebrated the event Wednesday at a special assembly. Mrs. Beth Lewis, music teacher, organized the event. Students performed patriotic songs and heard the history of our country’s great symbol. The 4th and 5th grade Sound Waves performed a special song.

Joining the special event were the Middle School / High School Band and Chorus led by Mr. Ben Smith, Director. The secondary musicians opened with the band playing the anthem and later the chorus sang a rendition of America.

A replica of the American Flag from 1812 was proudly displayed as the program closed. OSWAYO VALLEY ELEMENTARY
