SILHOUETTE TARGET SHOOT FOR SMALL BORE RIFLE IS SEPTEMBER 17

The Nessmuk Rod & Gun Club is hosting Silhouette Target Shoot for Small Bore Rifles weather permitting on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the club's outdoor range at 4646 Route 287 in Delmar Township, three miles south of Wellsboro.

This event is open to club members and the public.

Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the match at 1 p.m. Competitors will be placed in two age categories: 12 to 17 and 18 and older. The match fee is $3.

A smallbore rifle is a .22 caliber with a maximum barrel length of 30 inches and a maximum weight of 10 pounds, 2 ounces. Scopes are permitted. Only .22 short, or .22 long rifle caliber rim fire cartridges with a 40-grain maximum may be used. Hot loads such as stingers, are not permitted.

All shooters must approach the range with an unloaded firearm with the action in the open position. The action must remain in the open position until the shooter is on the shooting line and given the command to load and fire.

The match will consist of 20 rounds with five rounds fired in the standing position at targets in each category as follows: chicken at 40 meters; pig at 60 meters; turkey at 77 meters, and ram at 100 meters. Competitors will shoot 5 rounds per target. The competitor will continue rotating through the four stages until he or she has completed one 5-shot stage per target for a total of 20 rounds.

All score cards will be marked with a “O” for a miss and “X” for a hit. The scorecard will be marked in the same order as the targets are fired, left to right; until the stage is completed. Hits out of sequence are scored as a miss. A hit is scored when the target is fully knocked off the stand. Turning the target but not knocking it off the stand will be recorded as a miss.

Points will be awarded for accuracy with a time limit of 10 minutes for each 5-round stage.

Each round will be a 50/50 split with the club.

In the event of a tie, one five-round stage will be held with each competitor shooting at five of each of the four targets. If there is still a tie at the end of this 20-round stage the 50 percent prize will be split among the successful shooters.

All competitors and spectators near the range must wear eye and ear protection.
