Pioneer Oil Museum of New York
On Sunday, October 16, the Pioneer Oil Museum of New York located in Bolivar will host a book-signing for a newly-published book on the Shawmut Railroad, “Images of Rail: Pittsburg, Shawmut, & Northern Railroad,” written by Ken Clark. The event will take place beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the museum’s annex located at the former Hahn & Schaffner Pipe Supply Company.
A former Olean resident, Mr. Clark is president of the Pittsburg, Shawmut, & Northern Railroad Historical Society located in Angelica. His book contains 220 photographs, some never previously published. Chapter one presents photographs in milepost order in New York State, starting in Wayland, New York and ending at Prosser Junction. It includes scenes from the Hornell and Olean Branches. Chapter two continues the survey in Pennsylvania starting at the State Line Viaduct at Bullis Mills and ending in Hydes. Chapter three presents a pictorial survey of the railroad's motive power, passenger and freight equipment, cabooses and service cars. The final chapter is a pictorial survey of all the mines of the Shawmut Mining Company.
The book is of interest to local historians, collectors, educators, and railroad enthusiasts as it contains a large number of photographs from both Cattaraugus and Allegany counties as well as the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. Additionally, the Pioneer Oil Museum of New York has recently acquired the Bolivar depot of the PS&N line and is in the preliminary stages of planning for its restoration.
The night of the book-signing, the Pittsburg, Shawmut, & Northern Railroad Historical Society will have on display a variety of maps, photographs, and artifacts from its museum on the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Angelica. After Mr. Clark’s short lecture, there will be an opportunity for a question and answer session, culminated by the book-signing portion of the evening. Light refreshments will be available during the evening.
