The Civil Air Patrol is the US Air Force auxiliary. The National Search and Rescue Plan established in 1956, updated 2007, designates the United States Air Force as the Federal agency responsible for inland search and rescue, and the United States Coast Guard for all maritime search and rescue missions. Inland seach and rescue missions do not always require the USAF, due to local agency response. However, because it is a missing aircraft (military or civilian), the PA Wing of the Civil Air Patrol will be involved. Just because the USAF is involved, does not necessarily mean that the missing aircraft is of military origin.
