4 charged in alleged drug deal gone bad

Sun Gazette

ELKLAND — Four people were charged after an alleged drug deal went bad in Elkland last month.

According to documents filed at District Judge James Edgcomb’s office, Joseph F. Derenzo, 25, of 42 Depot St., Nelson, was charged by state police with aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance following the Oct. 23 incident at the Dollar General parking lot in Elkland.

Police said the incident occurred when Derenzo and his girlfriend, Kayla M. Palmer, 22, of Addison, New York, went to the parking lot to buy a $30 packet of heroin from Dakota J. Woodard, 22, of 2684 Merrick Hill Road, Knoxville, and Zoey M. Shomo, 19, of 232 Cummings Road, Tioga.

After the purchase, Derenzo found out it wasn’t what he thought it was and chased the pair in his car, reaching speeds of at least 120 mph, police said.

When Derenzo caught up with the pair’s vehicle, he allegedly rammed it two times at high speed, once outside of Elkland and the second on Merrick Hill Road, Knoxville, damaging the car’s steering.

Woodard’s boyfriend, Robert M. Hallick, who was a passenger, got out and confronted Derenzo, who knocked out Hallick with a single punch to the face, police said. Read more...
