Why God's Country voted for Trump

by William Bender, Staff Writer
Philly.com

COUDERSPORT, Pa. - Confused about how Donald Trump got elected? Maybe it's time for a road trip.Hop on the Schuylkill Expressway and drive past Allentown and Williamsport and 'villes you've never heard of.

Head north until your ears pop from the rise in elevation and the light pollution fades away and the stars seem so close you can reach up and stir them with your finger. Here, the Trump-Pence signs appear along hand-drawn ads for maple syrup, firewood, and dollar pumpkins. Deer heads perk up as you travel west on U.S. Route 6, past the wooden sign on your right with all-capital letters: "Welcome to Potter County. God's Country."

In Philadelphia, where 82 percent of voters chose Hillary Clinton, Trump's victory has triggered street protests and fears that the country is regressing along deep racial fault lines.

In Potter County, where 80 percent voted Trump, the result of Tuesday's election is neither surprising nor controversial. Read more...

As if a liberal Philadelphia Reporter or Newspaper has a clue about Potter County!! Why bother to mention Burnside or the KKK? Neither one is any reason Trump carried rural Potter County or rural America!! We're just sick of the political BS and corruption!!!!

2:11 I don't know what you do for a living, but spelling isn't your high point.

That's it! I've been looking for a part-time job. I think I'll become a writer. I've lived in McKean Co. all my life but I bet I could write a very informative article about Philadelphia's inner city and suburbs. Can't be that hard to do. I'm going to get right to work,,,, probably be done in about........ten minutes.

Poster 2:11....you are the reason that all of the city folks think that all of us country folks are uneducated. You should probably go back to your job and stay away from computers in general.

Wow. He's throwing scads of stuff out there seeing what sticks! Lots of words...nothing news-worthy. Maybe it works in Philly, NOT in God's Country.

I understand that Danny represents a very small group in the area. I also understand that most residents of the area do not agree with or endorse his beliefs and views. But, at what point does he warrant attention? At what point do he and his groups beliefs become synonymous with Ulysses and Potter County? Regardless of his status, he is getting attention. One day, the people of the area may just wake up to find that this inconsequential figure has gained a foothold, and then it may be too late.

It's really pretty simple Philly wants more welfare (Hillary) north of philly wants jobs (Trump) !!

I'm really sick and tired of the pompous a$&@&! That rips on people spelling. Probably the only thing they are good at. Learn how to spell correctly in all the languages on earth, then you might have something to be proud of.

Anonymous said...

618, it's spelled 'assholes' not "a$&@&!", please learn how to spell.

remember the old saying about "being silent and accused a fool, rather than opening one's mouth and proving it"--- the silent have spoken-

For goodness sakes, leave the 80 yr age fella alone, who cares if he missed spells, at least he's still working & not ducking our hard earned money out of us, I commend him for still working at the age of "80" I could care less if he can not spell to suit everyone, I hope & pray I'll be able to get around at 80 yrs of age like he does, I'll probably forget how to spell too ! LOL

6:18, you sure have a nasty attitude, the man is 80 yrs. Old & he's still working, he's not livin off the welfare system,

I find it disgusting that the author included a slur such as "redneck" in the article.
I also find it incredibly ironic, that a Hillary Clinton supported is quoted as using said slur. Are these not the same people that were calling everyone racists? What would the reaction be if someone from this area interview a trump supporter in philly and they were quoted as saying they couldn't place a trump sign in their yard because there were too many "insert racial slur here" around?
The double standard is sickening.

Thank you, 4:52 pm post.
Yes, a small group now, but there is concern of that foothold .If total grows as more become comfortable visiting,How quickly can it progress from right to gather on that property to going beyond what is lawful ???
I hope we can all stay on track here, and not insult each other.

I think this news article is a pathetic attempt to make Potter County Trump supporters look bad. Very lame and NOT WORHTHY OF REPEATING. I feel bad for the ones interviewed, clearly they are being USED to fuel the mind set of the left. Oh, and the spelling police on here, picking on a 80 year old man, that's not right and just sad. So tired of all this BS. Hope you're all proud of how they painted Potter County and be sure you all share this on social media for the world to see.

Believe me people. You don't have to worry about this stuff growing in Ulysses. It grew to a troublesome proportion back in the early 2000's and the source was "asked" to leave and moved out west somewhere.

That dude can stay in Philly, I voted for TRUMP, not one bit ashamed of it, he was God's choice & NO WAY DOES HE MAKE TRUMP SUPPORTERS LOOK BAD, JUST ANOTHER POOR & SAD LOSER, We did not need another Obama for another 4 yrs!

Please don't share this article on social media as it is such a sad representation of what our beloved God's Country, Potter County, is really about. Note: the "city" reporter didn't bother to stop at the Corner Restaurant in Ulysses, Kay-Ts in Coudersport, Fezz's, perhaps the courthouse, hospital, a volunteer fire station, farm, etc. to get a broader take on our rural community. He was just looking to present a very narrow view to make our rural American town fit the biased media's portrayal. The media is part of the problem as they like to insight negativity in our country instead of trying to impress everyone to work together toward peace. I for one know we live in a pretty good place where neighbor helps neighbor no matter their financial circumstances, race, religion, gender, or sexual preference. We are all Americans so let's pull together for the common good of the country. No more flag burning, no more disrespectfulness to the president elect, thank a veteran, & help the neighbor. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather what you can do for your country." -JFK We are all not rednecks or uneducated just like not all residents of a city are gang members or high maintenance. I personally want less government in my life as, in part, our forefathers formed our democracy based on that principle. It cost $ to oversee laws, taxes, legislation, etc & most of the time the layers of government impede things getting accomplished in a timely manner or at all. Why do you want Uncle Sam to keep getting more & more power over your personal life - I don't want it! How about you work hard for what you earn & in the long run you keep your freedoms - I much prefer that over a socialist regime. You can agree with me or agree to disagree. I say... "Give me liberty or give me death!" - Patrick Henry.

wish they cut welfare off to morrow and food stamps

Anonymous said...

Some people genuinely need it, especially some of our elderly, although they only get $10.00 in food stamps, it's very sad, worked with them for many yrs, Obama totally neglected right along with evert Hong else that's been neglected in America,
The ones that are too lazy to work & milking the system & they use gofundmes, they need to be taken off the System, they do gofundme for some of their own benefit & they prey on the people's emotions !

Very well said 9:10 pm

Originally from the area and sadly most of these comments are a representation of the greater amount of people and sorry, yes redneck.
I am sure glad to grow up in the area but sure glad I don't live there as an adult and have such a narrow way of thinking!

Poster 9:10. You are so absolutely correct on your post and it was so very very well said. We do not need more government in our lives. It is time for the hard working individuals to stop supporting the low life's that refuse to work and just sit back and milk the system. They have all the time in the world to riot and steal and destroy.

Where will they run to when/if the sh*t hits the fan in Philly? Right here, folks. Also even if we are rednecks, there's many worse things a person could be. If we look a bit deeper & see what Liberals have done to this country. They've created an entire generation that feels entitled to freebies & whose God has become their government. Their Common Core 'education" (indoctrination)which pushes Planned Parenthood's 'values'(Margret Sanger, eugenicist & Alfred Kinsey; the pedophile who wrote your kids 'sex ed' lessons) on to our kids & insists that we the taxpayer, pay for all unlimited abortions and pay for Obama's warfare. We're currently bombing 7 countries. Hillary wanted ww3 with Russia too, for God's sake. The media is fueling this discontent & violence. Seems they really do want to spark civil war as they've got all groups pitted against each other. That's why, I voted for Trump. To end Liberal corruption of our kids, and hopefully to end violence. Go to StandForFamiliesWorldwide website to see more about what Obama/Biden,planned parenthood & & The UN are doing to our children & kids around the world. We, the people of good intentions must stand together & call the liberal media out on every liberal lie, they tell.

To the person who stated we need to watch out because if we are quite Mr. Burnsides thought and actions could take over our area. I don’t know if you noticed the protest when he had his “meeting”, there were more people against his actions than for. The bulk of people would never think the way he does. The bulk of us think it is so disgusting it’s hard to speak. We who live in Ulysses struggle not to go into his yard and pull down his signs and repaint his garage. His way of thinking does not represent our community.
The article from the writer in Philadelphia is to incite fear and show hate. It was to reflect the rural people of Potter County as uneducated and narrow minded racist. We as a whole know we are not this. I have pride in my community and will not let one hateful person ruin that for me or my family.

The video was a ridiculously poor representation of our county! Badly done!

We had 8 years with the Clintons Hillary ran the country while Bill did otherthings. We had 8 years with Obama Where did it get us More debt and more welfare. I hope Trump gets rid of welfare and SSI. There are a few people that need SSI If you can use the computer you can work at home. Also tell me how many people can not sit in a wheelchair etc and do desk work. Stuff enevelopes etc?????? Ever have an oxygen tank I was at a dept over the weekend and a young women with oxygen on waited on me and did a wonderful job. We have a local man in a wheel chair and has a wonderful business. I believe with helping them out if they put an effort to help themselves. Not just sit at home and make more babies for more money. Help them with one child but no more. they get free birth control. I would have liked more children but could not afford anymore and I had to pay for my birth control.
