WELLSBORO—The Candlelight Walk for Peace and the Tree Lighting Ceremony will be Saturday night, Dec. 3 during Wellsboro’s Dickens of a Christmas celebration.

Walkers with lit candles will gather at Packer Park on Queen Street. Following a brief greeting at 5 p.m., the walk will proceed from Queen Street to Main Street and end on “The Green.”

Bryn Hammarstrom chairs the Peace Education Group of Tioga County, which sponsors the walk. “The walk is just as relevant today as when it was first held,” he said. The late Dr. John Dowling, a physics professor at Mansfield University, founded the Peace Education Group in the 1980s and started the walk soon after. “John was against war and totally dedicated to trying to find more peaceful ways to solve problems," Hammarstrom said. "John said 'Rather than assuming we are going to fight and survive a nuclear war, let’s do everything we can to prevent one because nuclear war is insane,'” Hammarstrom added.

The Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Carl Linscott will give a Christmas message followed by the lighting of the tree by 2016 Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen Valerie Smith of Jersey Shore. Christmas carols will be sung during the event led by the Wellsboro High School Dickens Choir directed by Judy Smithgall. Santa Claus will hand out candy canes.
