Work release or community service

They need to be locked Up! Release so wrong. Keep them where they won't rob or kill someone!

That place should have been shut down 30 years ago. Why do they hold onto it when it is 200 years old or wherever? Is there a law that a county has to have it's own jail with all of the staff and costs and liableity. What about Smethport or Wellsboro? Do they have room? How many suicides have they had that are all covered up? How many guards have been fired or quit? It is like a revolving door. That place belongs in the 1800s and not in the 2002s. Shut it down.

While I agree with a lot of what you say, it still is far cheaper to house them here than pay to house them elsewhere. If someone would run it like it should be instead of calling it a "cushy job to retire to" or just to feed egos, things might be better. Hopefully one day, the people will realize just how much is covered up by our local politicians and drain the swamp here in Potter County.

I have a hard time believing 2:39 that it would be more expensive to keep the jail open then to close it. Three shifts of guards and all that overhead, utilities, meals and a crumbling building dating back to the Parenthonon. They have what 20 jailmates? Maybe 200 bucks a week at a jail in Wellsboro of Smethport? Just guesting but pry close. That's $4 thousand a week times 52 weeks so less than $250 thousand. Transportation and time of the people driving the vans would be a cost too. What does the jail cost per year today? I bet more than $300 thousand. I am guessing but I want to ask 2:39 what statistics do you have?

@12:44 So, you're suggesting we eliminate jobs for people who live/work in this county and pay to house criminals elsewhere? In what parallel universe does that make sense? I'm pretty sure that every suicide that has ever occurred in ANY jail, not just this one, has been a matter of public record (reported by our "anything but unbiased" media and, the turnover rate (hirings, firings, and resignations) are in the Commissioners Meeting Reports posted on here every couple of weeks. So, there really is a lot of transparency. I will agree with one point you made: there does seem to be a two revolving door there with employee turnover. I guess you can look at that ways, either you follow the rules or you're out or, the new warden is REALLY hard to work for. Having never worked there, I can't answer that.

As one of your "anything but unbiased news media", we have never been advised by any official of the Potter County Jail of any suicides or attempted suicides, although I understand there have been many> Any reporting has been from information gleaned from 911 dispatches.

I gotta laugh at that first sentence by 3:34. Are you one of those liberals who believes that whenever the government creates a job that it is a GOOD thing? Who pays the salaries and bennies of the jail employees? The more employees on the county payroll the more you and I are paying. So when you point to eliminating jobs funded by tax dollars I see that as a good thing, just the opposite of your opinion.

Inmate population runs about 40. Multiply that by $65.00 per day per inmate plus medications (yes, it is that much), plus the cost to transport them to and from either Wellsboro or Smethport every time they have a hearing or appointment, plus the extra wear and tear on vehicles to do that, the extra vehicles needed to to keep up with said transports, etc., etc. Not to mention the hazards associated with transports(higher escape risk, more chances to obtain contraband, accident risk). The costs to close our jail, as bad as it may be, would put an additional burden on the taxpayers of this county. As for the overdoses and suicides, the powers that be have become very adept at keeping that hush hush so nobody questions how inept they really are.

2 years ago it cost $65 dollars a day per inmate to be housed in McKean county that got sent from potter county because of no female jail.

@3:44 Are you purposefully posting false information? The suicide on February 14,2015 WAS covered up. Want more details? I can provide them.

Is anybody concerned with the fact that one of the first things Glenn Drake did was fire the two jail guards who dared to oppose him in the election, Ralph Briggs and Roy Hunt? That, and buy two brand new, totally unnecessary vehicles?

The jail exists so Potter County can justify a full-time DA. I would vote for a DA candidate who ran on a platform of making the DA a part-time job and closing the jail. But what would Mr. Watson do if he was unemployed?

Yes please do provide them humor me please. This will be good MR. smart guy.

So because they're in jail for whatever reason they're considered low lives? Your ignorance suggests that you've never had a loved one who made mistakes that led to addiction. Do you really think they woke up one morning and said "I think I'm going to ruin my life and everyone around me for the fun of it?" They need help. The jail needs to do more thorough checks. I pray you never have to experience someone you care about make mistakes that take them down a dark path. It can happen to anyone's family. I don't care who you are. I've seen people who you would never guess become addicted to drugs.

Are you kidding me? You don't know what they're in jail for. I think it's completely arrogant to assume anyone who is in jail will rob or kill someone.
