WELLSBORO—During Wellsboro’s Dickens of a Christmas, the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro will be a beehive of activity with events in the lobby and front window.
Professional Dickens Portraits
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Thursday, Dec. 1, Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3, award-winning photographer Caleb Williams of Heritage Portrait Studio in Wellsboro will be creating Victorian portraits of families or individuals wearing Dickens era garb even those who came dressed for the day in modern clothes. Williams' "limited edition" Dickens portrait studio will be in the lobby at the Deane Center all three days.
The portraits he creates become treasured mementos. For those who want to have a Victorian portrait taken, Williams has racks of costumes sufficient to accommodate up to eight people, including men, women, boys and girls. His newest is a train conductor's costume for boys. He is offering a buy one, get one free Christmas card special on Dec. 1 and 2. Dickens Eve House Tour
The Dickens Eve House Tour check-in station will be in the Deane Center lobby from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2. Tours of the four historic homes in downtown Wellsboro will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 2. For advance reservations and a ticket price of $15 per person, call 570-787-7800, visit www.endlessmountain.net or stop in at Indigo Wireless at 64 Main Street in Wellsboro. On Friday, tickets for $20 per person and tour information will be available at the check-in station. Those who pre-register can pick up their tickets and tour information on Dec. 2 at the check-in station.
Clara's Court & "Nutcracker" for Youngsters
On Saturday, Dec. 3, dancers dressed in costume as Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Mouse Queen, the Snow Queen, Mother Ginger and other characters they play in the New Heights Dance Theater's production of "Nutcracker in Motion" will read stories to youngsters and help them make crafts at Clara's Court in the lobby at the Deane Center. All Clara's Court activities are free.
The costumed dancers will also present portions of "Nutcracker in Motion" in the Deane Center's front window. The free performances will be given at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The one hour and 45-minute production of "Nutcracker in Motion" is described as a fast-paced, jazzed up version of "The Nutcracker," a ballet holiday classic. "Motion" not only features ballet including pointe but also other types of dance such as jazz, modern, tap, lyrical and acrobatics. Full length performances will be given at the Clemens Center in Elmira, New York on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. The New Heights Dance Theater is a resident dance company of the Clemens Center.
Dickens Designer Hats
New York City hat designer Christine A. Moore of Christine A. Moore Millinery will be showcasing her specially designed “Dickens of a Christmas” Hat Collection. The trunk show will be set up in the Deane Center lobby on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. A percentage of the proceeds will go to the Deane Center. Moore first introduced her Dickens hat collection at the Wellsboro festival more than a decade ago. She is best known for her horse racing hat styles, two of which are in the Kentucky Derby Museum. Her Fall 2016 and Dickens collections will be available at the Fifth Season now through Christmas Eve.
Rotary Club Gun Raffle
From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, Wellsboro Rotary Club members will have raffle tickets available for a $10 donation in the lobby at the Deane Center. The prizes are: a Stevens Model 555 Goldwing over/under 20 gauge shotgun; a Savage Hunter XP rifle with a Nikon 3.9 by 40-inch scope in the winner's choice of caliber; a .22 magnum Henry Golden Boy repeating rifle; a Ruger American rifle in the winner's choice of caliber; a $250 American Express gift card; and a Bushnell Trophy XD Trail Camera. The drawing for the six winners will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4 at Timeless Destination at 77 Main Street in Wellsboro. The winners need not be present but must be qualified to own and possess firearms in their home state and in Pennsylvania.
