Fire destroys log home, kills pets

MANSFIELD — A fast-moving fire that had been burning for “some time” before it was discovered destroyed the log home of Wayne and Janice Yskamp at 813 Valley Road, Richmond Township, on Tuesday.

According to Mansfield Fire Chief Jim Welch, the Yskamps’ son, Brad, was living in the two-story home with two dogs and a cat.

The pets perished in the blaze, he said.

The parents were staying at a camp they own in Potter County, Welch said.

“The son left the residence around 2 p.m., so there is no way to know when the fire started,” Welch said.

By the time anyone noticed the smoke coming from the burning house, it was after 5 p.m., Welch said.

Because the house was at the end of a 1,500-foot, narrow, steep driveway, it could not be seen from the road.

By the time a neighbor drove up the driveway to check it out, the house was fully involved, with the roof already collapsed in on the structure, Welch said.  Read more...
