Small Town Christmas in Shinglehouse

Small Town Christmas in Shinglehouse
By Monica Thomas

Small Town Christmas Parade sparks the beginning of the season in Shinglehouse along with Shop Small Saturday. Twenty businesses participated in the Saturday shopping opportunity that focuses on small business within many communities. The OV Senior Center hosted eight home-based businesses’ while Sprouts Drug Store, Pire’s Appliances, Garrity Sales, The Rose Tea Shop, Shop n Save, Howard’s Home Furnishings, Norton’s Supply and several others participated in the event.

As part of the event the “I Spy 20 Tiny Christmas Rats” Contest continues until December 3, 2016. Participants locate the critter in the business; have their form validated for all 20 sites and return to Pire’s Appliance and a drawing will be held for some wonderful gifts. They will be announced at the Community Choir Christmas Concert, to be held at the Shinglehouse Fire Hall on December 16 at 7:00 p.m.

The Parade had 14 entries; it traveled from the High School past beautifully lite Assembly Park to the OV Senior Center which hosted a Mini- Festival for the children. Games, hot cocoa and cookies donated by the American Legion Post 530 Auxiliary were available to all. Several local vendors sold warm soups and hotdogs as children waited in line to visit with Santa. All of the children received a hat, scarf and mittens that were hand crocheted or knitted by the ladies of the senior center.

Miss Oswayo Valley Destiny Green greeted well wishes as well as Mikela Flamini the Potter County Fair Queen Alternate along the parade route. The category winners of the Parade which hosted the theme “ Country Christmas” were: Walking/Marching- Shinglehouse Girl Scouts “ Winter Camping Out,” Car/ Truck- The Phil and Caren Austin Family “Gingerbread House,” Float/Trailer-Potter County Trail Blazers “ Hillbilly Sled Ride,” ATVS- Steve Matthews “Country Christmas Buggy Ride,” Fire/Emergency Vehicle- Bolivar Fire Department.
