Tuna Valley Trail Association board of directors meet

http://www.tunavalleytrail.com/The November meeting of the Tuna Valley Trail Association board of directors was held last week. The Marilla Trail Race that was held on Oct 8 was discussed. Despite the rather poor weather, the event was successful with well over 100 participants which included many from outside this region. This year's event included a chicken BBQ, which was well received. The board expressed their appreciation and thanks to the many participants, sponsors, volunteers, and the race committee members for this year's event. Plans for next year's race will begin after the first of the year.

Thanks and appreciation were given to the UPB groups that assisted with the Marilla Trail Race & Make a Difference Day. They were: Greek Council, Zeta Alpha Chi, Habitat for Humanity, Gold Bar Club/ROTC, Alpha Phi Omega, and the Pitt-Bradford Swim Team

The Cornelius Connection Trail dedication ceremony was held at the Marilla Landing location on October 15. The trail is named in honor of the late Gene Cornelius, founding member and Master Trailblazer of the TVTA, who passed away earlier this year. The ceremony was very well attended by family members, board members, community leaders, local media, and the public.

The monthly financial report included the announcement of an anonymous donation of stocks to the TVTA. This generous donation investment will assist the organization's efforts to continue with the development, preservation, enhancement, and linking of the natural corridors throughout the Tuna Valley and beyond.

A time frame for the fabricating and installing a kiosk for the newly constructed Keystone Trailhead in Lewis Run was discussed. Due to the upcoming holiday season and other scheduling conflicts, this work will take place after the first of the year. This new trailhead was made possible through the efforts and cooperation of Keystone Powdered Metal of Lewis Run with the trailhead development being included with other activities that were recently completed. The location of this new trailhead is along the Blaisdell-Emery Trail near the main entrance of their manufacturing facility.

The trail development and maintenance activities are winding down now with the approach of winter. "Gene's Machines", our ATV and mowing equipment, have been serviced and prepared for storage. Some problems regarding drainage at Marilla Landing were presented and discussed, especially near the Cornelius Connection Trailhead. Representatives from the Bradford Water Authority and TVTA will meet onsite after Thanksgiving to review and develop some corrective measures that could take place before the arrival of winter. An overview of the drainage issues over the entire Marilla Landing area is also under consideration as this will likely become a heavily utilized space in the future and relieve some of the safety and congestion issues along Rt 346 next to the Marilla Reservoir.

Several board members attended and shared their thoughts on the recent Allegheny National Forest Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Summitt meeting held at UPB on November 6.

Information regarding the recently completed 42nd Parallel Ride with the Western New York Mountain Bike Association was presented. This was a 3 day/120 mile mountain biking adventure that began in Ellicottville and travelled to Allegheny State Park and the Allegheny National Forest. A portion of the route included the Marilla Springs Trail and Willow Creek ATV trail.

The original TVTA organizational strategic plan and consideration of accomplishments along with future plans were discussed. The trail system connection to the Kinzua Bridge State Park was highlighted, and a review of past efforts with this activity were presented. The board felt that this would be something to revisit, and a work session to go over past efforts and future considerations has been tenatively scheduled for November 28.

Additional TVTA organization information is available on Facebook and at www.tunavalleytrail.com There will be no December meeting. The next board meeting will be held on January 3, 2017.
