Cornell Nicholas 'Pete' Pfohl, III
Cornell Nicholas 'Pete' Pfohl, III, 90, of 169 Derrick Road, Bradford, PA, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born January 22, 1926 in Bradford, he was a son of the late Cornell and Elizabeth (Miller) Pfohl, Jr.
On December 29, 1947 in Bradford, he married Harriet VanScoy (Smith) Pfohl, who passed away June 5, 2006. On August 3, 2008, he then married Betty (Jones) Pfohl, who survives.
After graduating from The Hotchkiss School in Salisbury, CT, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged. He then attended business school in Rhode Island.
He worked as a roustabout in the local oil fields, first for Independent Oil Producer, Dick Jones and then for Smith/Newton. He owned and operated Gene's Delivery Service and later worked for A. A. Miller & Sons Lumber Company. Along with Bob Sage he bought and operated Tool 'n' Toy. Once they started selling ski equipment Pete took on the ski and rental shop at Grosstal Ski Resort, In the fall of 1966, he opened The Headwall Ski Shop on Main Street in Bradford with his wife, Harriet, which they ran together until 1978.
Pete loved his home, Beechwood, and his cottage on Georgian Bay, Ontario. He spent many enjoyable hours in his workshop building furniture, models, radio controlled airplanes and watercolor painting. There wasn’t a home improvement or repair task he wouldn’t take on including plumbing, electrical work, building cabinetry, wallpapering, engine repair, and even redoing his foundation. Pete was known for his integrity, his modesty, and his love for his family and all animals. He enjoyed skiing and skied with style into his 80's.
He was a member of The Mason’s Union Lodge #334 F&AM, and The Lions Club.
In addition to his wife, Betty, of eight years, he is survived by two daughters, Pamela Pfohl and Neidra Hart, and her husband, Craig, and two grandchildren, Lorne Hart (Lauren) and Jovanna Hart (Ryan); step daughter, Christine Scherman and her husband Bill; two step sons, Scott Nelson and Grant Nelson and his wife, Liliane; two step grandsons, Nicolas Nelson and Terence Nelson and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife, Harriet, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Pfohl, two sisters, Barbara Byrnside and Janaan Moncure and a brother, Jerry Pfohl.
Friends are invited to a celebration of Pete's life, which will be held at the Model T on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from 12pm to 2pm.
Memorial contributions, if desired, can be made to the Lisa Pfohl Scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford or to the charity of the donor's choice.
