REGISTER NOW FOR THE BASICS OF PISTOL SHOOTING COURSE

The Nessmuk Rod and Gun Club, three miles south of Wellsboro, is a host site for Phase II of the National Rifle Association's Basics of Pistol Shooting course.

The two-phase course is for first-time and novice pistol owners who want to learn how to safely shoot and store a pistol and for pros that want to brush up on their skills. Anyone interested in completing the course, including Phase II on May 6 or Sept. 9, 2017 at the Nessmuk Rod and Gun Club's range, should consider registering for Phase l now.

Phase l is an easy-to-understand training program. Anyone who registers and pays the $60 Phase l fee will receive a book in the mail about the basics of pistol ownership, fundamentals of how to shoot a pistol and the safe care, cleaning and storage of a pistol. “We highly recommend that participants read the book first before looking at the online course slides,” said Marilyn Jones. She is one of three Nessmuk Rod and Gun Club members who are certified instructors for the hands-on shooting portion of the course. The others are Mary Robinson-Slabey and Pat Butts.

“Those who register can go at their own pace,” said Jones, lead instructor. “It can take up to 35 hours or more to complete Phase l, which includes studying the 11 lessons in the book and the online slides, and the online exam,” she added. “The amount of time it takes depends on the individual,” Jones said.

Registrants have 90 days to complete and pass Phase l. Those who score 90 percent on the exam will instantly be able to print off their online certificate of completion to show they have passed. Those who do not pass on the first try will have four additional opportunities to retake the exam.

To register for Phase l of the course, visit https://basicpistol.nra.org and click where indicated “to register today” or those who have already registered can click where indicated to log back into the course.

Those who earn their online certificate can use their PIN number and User ID to register for Phase II, the instructor-led, hands-on shooting portion of the course, which is limited to 12 students, ages 16 and older.

Phase II includes four exercises: Firearm and range safety; dominate eye, two-handed grip and fundamentals of pistol shooting; loading, cocking, de-docking, unloading and pistol maintenance; and shooting position and qualifications (shooting five rounds inside a four-inch red circle at 10 feet two times from a bench-rest and from an Isosceles standing position).

Those who register to participate at the Nessmuk Rod and Gun Club at 4646 Route 287 in Delmar Township on Saturday, May 6 or Saturday, Sept. 9 have to show their Phase I certificate. The fee is $20. Checks or money orders for Phase II can be sent to Marilyn Jones, 1155 Old State Road, Covington, PA 16917.
