Anti-Racism Protest Set For 2:45 PM Today At Ulysses Post Office

Organizers of an anti-racism protest set for today will meet at the Ulysses Post Office at 2:45 PM for a rally to begin at 3:00 PM.

The protest is in response to a white supremacy group advertising a National Socialist meet & greet in that Potter County Borough for today starting at 3:45 PM, also scheduled to meet at the post office.

Organizer Joe Leschner said "We cannot allow this element into our county. I was born and raised here, and although many of us have different views politically, I believe that most of us believe in inclusion. We must hold a peaceful protest. My goal is to show them that they must go elsewhere when they see the support we have. Please share this on your page and invite everyone you know! NOT IN OUR COUNTY!!!"

"People are welcome to speak as long as it's on topic to our current concern. Or something else that signifies peace.

Signs are welcomed and encouraged. Again, something that pertains to our current event or peace.

Be respectful and courteous. And I believe we will have a successful event."

Judge Leete issues split decision in Paterno v. NCAA case

By Lori Falce
Centre Daily Times

The discovery battle between the estate of longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and the university’s law firms saw scores on both sides with an order posted Friday.

The order was dated Thursday, when Potter County Senior Judge John Leete, specially presiding in the Centre County case between the Paternos and the NCAA, signed it.

The estate has fought with the university and its lawyers for years over what information should be released and what shouldn’t in the case. Penn State was previously a party to the lawsuit but has since been removed. However, the discovery of information related to the Louis Freeh investigation of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal is still at the heart of the case.

Penn State has argued that it has an attorney-client relationship with Freeh, Sporkin and Sullivan, one of the firms of former FBI director Freeh.

Leete said no.

Highland Township Gives Up Fight To Block Drilling Waste Injection Well

by Andrew Maykuth, Staff Writer @Maykuth
Philly.com

Highland Township, a tiny Elk County town that in 2013 approved an ordinance banning natural-gas wastewater injection wells, overturned the ordinance this week and promptly settled a federal lawsuit with a Marcellus Shale gas producer that wants to build a disposal well in the community.

Two new supervisors on the township's three-member governing board voted Wednesday to rescind the ordinance, saying they were unlikely to prevail in a lawsuit with gas producer Seneca Resources Corp. The supervisors then entered into a consent decree with Seneca, which U.S. Magistrate Susan Paradise Baxter approved on Thursday. Read more...

The latest news from the State Capitol

Rear-Facing Child Safety Seats Now Required – Children in Pennsylvania under the age of 2 must now be securely fastened in a rear-facing child safety seat while riding in a vehicle.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends infants should be in a rear-facing car seat until they weigh at least 20 pounds and are at least age 1.

New rules taking effect today require children under age 2 in Pennsylvania to use the rear-facing seat until they outgrow the maximum weight and limits designated by the manufacturer. Previously, state law did not specify how the car seat should be facing.

According to existing state law, children under age 4 must be buckled into a child safety seat. Children ages 4-7 must be buckled into a properly secured child booster seat, while children ages 8 and over must be buckled in a seat belt.

It’s Fair Week – The Elk County Fair continues through this Saturday, Aug. 13, in Kersey. For more information, please click here to visit the fair’s Facebook page.

Sponsored by Penn State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, the event attracts more than 45,000 attendees and nearly 500 exhibitors from 34 states and Canada. In addition to the exhibits, attendees can participate in research tours, watch machinery demonstrations, enjoy interactive family fun and receive free health screenings.

While there, the House and Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs committees will hold an informational briefing on general dairy industry issues.

No admission fee is charged, and parking is free. For more information, please click here

The cost is $5 per child (payable by check or money order) for families above income guidelines. No child will be turned away because of an inability to pay.
