The Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania and Western New York is reporting an urgent need for all blood types, especially A-, O- & O+ and is asking community members to donate at one of two upcoming blood drives.

“Our partner hospitals prefer to have a three-day supply of all blood types, and we are approaching a 1.5-day supply of A-, O- & O+. It’s crucial that donors with these types donate as soon as they are eligible. Our partner hospitals are relying on it,” says Nicole Hornaman, communications and marketing coordinator for the blood bank.

On Wednesday, January 18 Galeton community is invited to donate blood at Galeton High School in the cafeteria from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Then, on Thursday, January 19 Shinglehouse community is invited to donate blood at Oswayo Valley High School in the library from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Both drives are open to the community, walk-ins are welcome.

These blood drives are part of National Blood Donor Month, every donor will receive either a limited-edition coffee mug or a t-shirt, while supplies last.

Individuals are eligible to give blood if it has been 56 days since their last donation; are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental consent); weigh at least 110 pounds; have not received a tattoo or body piercing in the past 12 months; are in good general health and do not have a cold or the flu. You must have a valid photo ID to register. Prior to donating, those giving blood should eat a good, solid meal and drink at least 18 oz. of water.
