Second Quarter Burst Leads Panthers Over Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. - The Pitt-Bradford women’s basketball team outscored Alfred State 27-7 during the second quarter of Tuesday night’s contest to run away for a 79-56 victory.

The Panthers’ defense stifled the Pioneers, recording a season-high eight blocks and allowing just 19 made baskets. Alfred State shot just 25 percent from the floor, far and away the lowest shooting percentage Pitt-Bradford has yielded all season.

Alfred State led 17-11 after the first 10 minutes, hitting four first-quarter threes, yet the Pioneers would go stone-cold as the Panthers turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter.

Consecutive threes by Darien Lantz and Ali Rinfrette put the Panthers in front 19-17, and Pitt-Bradford would outscore Alfred State by 12 over the final 7:47 to build a 38-24 halftime lead. The bench sparked the closing 19-7 run to the half, scoring 11 points.

Allison Guengerich erupted for 11 third-quarter points, and her second three of the frame at the 3:04 mark upped the Panthers’ margin to 52-32. The Pioneers never threatened again as they managed just eight made field goals the rest of the way.

Pitt-Bradford shot 39 percent from the floor and hit nine threes. The bench combined to score 47 points, its best output of the season, and the Panthers dominated inside, outrebounding the Pioneers by 16 and holding a 34-18 scoring edge in the paint.

Stephanie Maciag and Ali Rinfrette led Pitt-Bradford with identical double-doubles of 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Guengerich matched her season-high with 14 points. Jennifer Isenberg went 6-10 from the field, scoring 12 points, and Brittany Watts added 10. Rinfrette led the Panthers with seven assists and six steals, and Casey Stringer netted three blocks.

Pitt-Bradford jumps to 10-8 on the season and travels to Franciscan Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip.
